Powell's Staff: 9 New Books to Read This Transgender Day of Visibility (0 comment)
March 31 is International Transgender Day of Visibility, a day dedicated to celebrating the lives and accomplishments of transgender and gender-nonconforming people, while continuing to bring attention to the ongoing prejudice and violence the community faces every day. It’s also a day that serves as an important reminder to cisgender folks...

The Last Train by Michael Pronko
    N, September 04, 2018
I hear that there is a new book in this series coming. I can't wait! I have always loved Michael Pronko's essays. I put off reading this because I was afraid he would fall off his pedestal when he started writing fiction. I needn't have worried. I was immediately hooked. This book is quite the page turner. I was fascinated by the idea of a sympathetic villain. I was surprised at one point when two Japanese girls climbed into the bath and soaped up. My experience has been that soaping and rinsing happens before one gets in the bath in Japan. Other than that I was completely captivated. I highly recommend this wonderful mystery. Thank you to Mr Pronko, his publisher and NetGalley for sharing an advance copy in exchange for an honest review.

White Kids Growing Up with Privilege in a Racially Divided America by Margaret A. Hagerman
    N, July 23, 2018
I found this to be a fascinating subject. The writing was pretty academic in style, but I was pulled right along by the topic and the interviews. I think this is a much needed book. I'm sorry that it was not more approachable in style. I very glad that Margaret Hagerman has shared her research with us and look forward to her next book. Well researched. Good bibliography. Really raised a lot of questions for me. It would be great to read this with others as it begs conversation. I'm grateful to NYU Press and NetGalley for sharing an advanced copy in exchange for my honest review.

The Girl With All The Gifts: Hungry Plague 1 by M R Carey
    N, June 12, 2018
This was really well reviewed and so I thought I'd try it. I was given a print copy by the publisher in exchange for an honest review. I found it intriguing at first, but it wasn't really my cup of tea. I will say that it kept me engaged and I listened all the way to the end. Finty Williams was an excellent reader. I did find the characters believable and could relate to them so that was a plus. I had a problem with the idea that the infected children were able to break a window in an armored vehicle with a stone. Some parts felt predictable to me, but it moved right along. I think folks that enjoy horror and the zombie genre would be very happy with this tale.

I picked this up at the suggestion of Powell's Daily Dose. I was disappointed. Had to give up. It started out very interesting, but became a bit repetitive. I did find some of the references a little dated. If I had more time and fewer books in my stack I might have given it more of a chance.

Obama: An Intimate Portrait by Pete Souza
    N, April 23, 2018
An exceptional book. I loved reading the stories behind the photos and to get Obama's take on being shadowed by a photographer. The pictures are wonderful! Some funny, some sweet, some heartbreaking. All with a great eye and they really capture the mood of the moment. This will be a treasure in anyone's library.

Chasing Light Michelle Obama Through the Lens of a White House Photographer by Amanda Lucidon
    N, April 23, 2018
I was looking forward to this book after reading Obama: an Intimate Portrait by the White House photographer, Pete Souza. That was a high standard to which I was holding this book. Chasing Light did not have the more intimate portraits of the Souza book. Perhaps the photographer did not have the same access. It is a beautiful book. Michelle Obama is a truly inspiring woman and that really came across. The text gives us more insight into the photographer's experience. I missed having Ms. Obama's input. An interesting book, but not as truly terrific as the book about the president.

You Are Beloved Daily Meditations for Spiritual Living by Henri JM Nouwen
    N, December 30, 2017
Lovely collection of Henri Nouwen's writings. Collected in small daily doses. Quite a variety of sources both published and unpublished. Very minimal introduction. Good list of sources allows one to track down their favorite works. I would have liked some biographical material to accompany this book, but I can find that online. I really like the binding and cover. Very comfortable book. A good introduction for someone unfamiliar with Nouwen's oeuvre. Thank you to the publisher and Blogging for Books for giving me an advance copy in exchange for my honest review.

Homecoming: Tillerman #1 by Cynthia Voigt
    N, November 06, 2017
This book feels so real that I had to remind myself that it was fiction. Well developed characters and lots of thought provoking incidents. I can easily see why it was nominated for several international prizes and made into a movie. It is a good choice for a book club. Our Vintage Book Circle had mixed reactions. Some of us were looking for more escape and so this was too gritty for them. Others really appreciated the grounded reality that was presented as well as the courage and tenacity of the children in the book. When I finished and wanted to immediately read Dicey's Song the Newbery award winning sequel to this one. Glad it was chosen for our book club.

    N, October 03, 2017
Stunning! This is a book into which one can disappear. The language is beautiful and so descriptive. The story captivates and pulls one along. Will Patton is an excellent narrator. You feel like you know the characters as personal friends. Charles Frazier is an amazing writer.

Very thought provoking and yet quite the page turner. I zoomed through this one. I was really caught up in the characters. Trying to decide how would I react in this situation. I found Valerie to be an incredibly strong young girl. I'm not sure I could have stood what she went through. Very real. I think this would be an excellent choice for a book group. Challenging for all ages.

School of the Dead by Avi
    N, September 23, 2017
Fun book. I just whizzed through it. It left me dangling for some time, unsure of who was a good guy and who was a bad one. I found many of the children at the new school very friendly. After reading a lot of YA books that seemed too good to be true. I much prefer the atmosphere of this book to those with a harder heart. A good adventure story for boys. I'm grateful to Edelweiss and Harper Collins for sharing this book with me in exchange for an honest review.

Six Four by Hideo Yokoyama, Jonathan Lloyd Davies
    N, September 23, 2017
Wow, what a wild ride! I stayed up way to late getting to the end of this page turner. I found this to be a fascinating look inside the politics of the Japanese police force. I was interested by some of the turns of phrase and the detail concerning the depth of bows. I enjoyed the twists and turns in the plot. I read this in print and listened to parts when my husband was listening. I found the narrator to be frustratingly slow in his delivery. My husband chose to speed up the recording but that was less than entirely satisfactory. He really liked the book in spite of these difficulties.

In This Grave Hour: Maisie Dobbs 13 by Jacqueline Winspear
    N, April 05, 2017
I do love these Maisie Dobbs books. This one moves away from Maisie's grief and back to the feeling of Ms Winspear's earlier books. (which were more favorites of mine) I do so appreciate the depth of feeling that pervades these books. I love all the people with which they are filled. The characters are so full that they feel like friends. My heart breaks as the young boys go off to war. Wonderful mystery, too. Thank you for a great read. I'm just very sorry that it ended so quickly. I really try to take longer to read these, but they are such page turners that it is hard.

Mushrooms of the Redwood Coast A Comprehensive Guide to the Fungi of Coastal Northern California by Noah Siegel, Christian Schwarz
    N, November 08, 2016
This is a gorgeous book. Wonderful photography! Each mushroom is shown at different stages and against it's natural background. Really dense with information. Very informative about habitat with great photographs of important trees in the lives of the fungi. Great glossary, two indexes for Latin names as well as common names, good resource guide and an extensive bibliography. The only drawback is that the book is huge. Not something you can carry to the woods with you, but a fantastic resource when you get your collection home.

Heart In The Right Place by Carolyn Jourdan
    N, May 18, 2016
This is one of the best books I've ever read. A true story of a high powered lawyer that comes home to help out in her dad's small town medical office when her mother becomes ill. Her storytelling is phenomenal. I laughed til I cried. Her struggles with what to do with her life are touching. Her characters so real you really feel for them and cheer for them and cry for them. I was constantly reading pieces to friends as I read. I couldn't get enough of it. I hope Ms Jourdan will write more. I have bought multiple copies to give to friends. It really has something for everyone. Real heart! I might recommend Population 485 by Michael Perry. It is not as funny, but also has great heart. quote from Heart in the Right Place: "It's hurting in a place I call my skull, between my arm and my neck, near the fingers, cause of my leg, over on the other side. It hurts. Ye might wanna jab a needle in it.... I need to get my feet and ankles xrayed. I took the flu, got diarrhea, and it went to my feet. It didn't help that I dropped a piece of wood on them either."

A Midsummer's Equation: A Detective Galileo Mystery by Keigo Higashino
    N, November 17, 2015
I am stunned by Keigo Higashino. His creativity, storytelling and characters are all terrific. I love the way he makes me think. Nothing can be assumed. The story goes off in directions not to be anticipated and it is a wonderful journey. I was thrilled to see a new title by Mr Higashino and was not disappointed! I hope we see more and more of his books translated. I am waiting with baited breath for the next one. I am grateful to St Martin's Press and NetGalley for giving me a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

The War That Saved My Life by Kimberly Brubaker Bradley
    N, November 17, 2015
I greatly enjoyed this book. Good insights into the mind of a neglected and abused child. Lovely optimistic view of a child's healing and growth. It ended kind of abruptly and I hope that the writer will continue these children's story in future books. Good for folks that loved Good Night, Mr Tom and Carrie's War.

The Map Trap by Andrew Clements
    N, November 10, 2015
I like Andrew Clements a lot. This is a good one. Very short, quick read. Good characters. Nice illustration. Interesting way to look at the world, through maps. Good message without being heavy handed. I liked how Alton overcame his preconceived notion of the popular kid. I appreciated his figuring out to apologized first. I was interested to see that the author chose to point out that teachers are just like kids too. I think this would make a good book club book for middle graders.

Embodied Light: Advent Reflections on the Incarnation by Melissa Tidwell
    N, November 01, 2013
I'm really loving this. I like bringing the full body into the reflections. Staying in touch with my body during a time when a lot of junk food is in my face is very helpful. As a personal devotional I find this a wonderful book. Three and a half stars because I am disappointed that the reflections don't continue through Epiphany. The Advent cycle is four weeks. I was a little confused by the six week group study guide provided at the end. I'm not sure the best way to gather six times in the four week period. Just my lack of creativity. Thank you Upper Room for sharing this title with me in exchange for my honest review. I was grateful for this opportunity.

Another Forgotten Child by Cathy Glass
    N, June 11, 2013
I really like Cathy Glass's books. I would recommend them to anyone that liked Torey Hayden or Mary MacCracken. All of these authors trace the growth of children with enormous emotional challenges. Cathy Glass is British and so shows us another country's way of helping these children. The things that work and those that are problematic. Ms Glass's dialog is sometimes stilted, but she is a great storyteller. When I pick up her books, I just can't put them down. I get absolutely nothing done until the last page is finished.

Glimpses of the Moon by Edmund Crispin
    N, June 05, 2013
This was a very fun book. It took me a little while to get into it, but it was worth the trouble. Great characters, good story, lots of laughs. I was very glad to have it on my eReader. Edmund Crispin uses a lot of archaic language. Having a dictionary at my fingertips was really helpful. I really enjoyed this book and am ready to read it again. My enthusiasm convinced my husband to read it. I'll be glad to have someone to share it with. Thank you to NetGalley for introducing me to this delightful book.

Freedom from Worry: 28 Days of Prayer by Patricia Wilson
    N, May 21, 2013
I was given an advanced copy of this title by NetGalley. I have read the first week's readings and I so impressed with this book that I have already bought a copy for a friend who is going through some tough times. This is one I will want to have on hand for times when worries try to take over. I tend to get into the hamster wheel of thoughts repeating themselves over and over again. This really had some very helpful ideas to break the cycle and focus on what really matters. Ms Wilson uses the Psalms to help us learn how to "let go and let God" This book helps to build faith and trust in the Almighty and bring peace to a worried soul.

Bible Nrsv Spiritual Formation by NRSV Zondervan
    N, August 25, 2012
This is truly the finest bible I have ever encountered. The margin notes and essays are really wonderful. They call me to examine myself and the scripture I am reading. I am drawn deeper in to the text and closer to the Divine. In my Quaker meeting we call these kind of notes "queries". Questions without answers but that cause us to ponder more fully and explore more deeply our thoughts and feelings. It is sustaining and uplifting to meditate on these queries. They bring the bible alive. With this bible I look forward to bible reading and what it will bring to my day and my life. I am saddened that it has fallen out of print. I do wish Zondervan would bring it back. I buy used copies whenever I see them to share with friends. I have both the NIV translation as well as the NRSV. They are both terrific. I am hoping that it will be made available electronically so that I can carry it with me everywhere. I wish I could get this on my Kindle and iPad. It would be great to have it with me always. I wish I knew how to contact Timothy K Jones to thank him for this fantastic resource.

    Midwifes Story by Penny Armstrong
    N, August 08, 2012
I love these midwife stories. This one was more about the Amish with whom Penny Armstrong worked. It didn't touch me in the same way that Blue Cotton Gown did. It is a very interesting look at the way women give birth in America and the way hospitals work versus home births. This comes from someone in the medical profession that was skeptical about home birthing until she started helping with them. A good read.

Book of Mormon Girl Stories from an American Faith by Joanna Brooks
    N, July 06, 2012
As a librarian, I was given a digital galley of this title. I am very grateful to the publisher for making this available to me. This is a wonderful book for our library collection. I have read several books by former Mormons. They have not been entirely complementary. It is great to have a book that can explain the wonderful parts of this controversial religion. I really related to what Joanna Brooks had to say. I have had so many heroes turn out to be flawed. She had this in spades with her religion. She is able to share with us her way of cherishing the wonderful parts while working to change the bad. I am grateful to Ms Brooks for having the courage to share her journey.

    N, June 21, 2012
What a breath of fresh air! I love M.C.Beaton. This was a new kind of mystery for Hamish Macbeth. Lots of twists and turns and unresolved loose ends. I really enjoyed it. My family was going through some stressful times and this was just the right light touch and escape. Thank you for a great read!

Pigeon Pie Mystery by Julia Stuart
    N, June 14, 2012
I got a copy of this title from Edelweiss and am delighted that they were so generous. This was a terrific read, really wonderful! I loved the language and the wit. It kept me laughing. Very satisfactory solution. I look forward to more from Ms. Stuart. She has a wonderful turn of phrase, a gift for characters and an eye for the absurd. I can't wait to get this on the shelves at my library so that I can share it with my patrons.

Horse Camp by Nicole Helget and Nate Leboutillier
    N, June 11, 2012
This is a book about a couple of pretty unlikable characters. They do learn and grow, just not as much as I would have preferred. I had hoped for the peripheral characters to be more fleshed out. I did like their use of Horse Camp as a new adjective for something that is not at all as it was advertised. The book did leave me wishing to know where do they go from here. Is there a sequel in the works?

Memoir of the Sunday Brunch by Julia Pandl
    N, June 11, 2012
This is a truly wonderful love story of a family. Her stories had me laughing out loud in some places and the sections around a death in the family broke my heart? Julia Pandl wrote just like we feel during such emotional times. I haven't seen grief expressed so well and so creatively before. I never thought I would say that I would read anything by a publisher. But Algonquin is masterful. Their editorial staff is remarkable and I will read anything they do. This is just one fine example of the terrific quality if writing that they publish. Years ago I was part of their Marching & Chowder Society. I'm thrilled to find they have kept their high standards and are still putting out exceptional work.

    Croak by Gina Damico

This was a fun book. The characters were a little heavy with the sarcasm for me. But it didn't detract from a creative story. The idea of a teenage grim reaper made me laugh. The book is a page turner. I really had a hard time putting it down.

We Bought a Zoo by Benjamin Mee
    N, May 25, 2012
I won this book from the Goodreads FirstReads giveaway. I really enjoyed it. I love to read about a profession that is new to me. I like to see how things look from the inside. This was a fascinating fly on the wall look at zookeeping. What a story! It doesn't run completely chronologically and so this caused me some confusion at first, but it didn't diminish my pleasure in reading. I work at a library and this book will be high on my list of books to recommend and I will probably buy a couple of copies for Christmas gifts. I was also given a DVD of the movie and I look forward to viewing it. I'm glad that I had the book to read first.

Racing the Moon by Alan Armstrong, Tim Jessell
    N, May 02, 2012
I'm a librarian and received a copy of this book from NetGalleys. There are quite a lot of wild antics in this book. I was taken aback at first for the lack of consequences for some of the more irresponsible actions of the characters. I was glad (as were the characters) when an caring adult finally took charge to help these kids toward their dreams. It is certainly a page turner. As a librarian I know that there are some kids that would really appreciate what this book has to say. I'm glad to have it to share with them.

Indian Captive The Story Of Mary Jemison by Lois Lenski
    N, May 02, 2012
Indian Captive is a story that will make a great gift and open doors to terrific conversations. I appreciated it as much now as an adult as I did when I was a child. I loved the gentle introduction to Native American philosophy and Molly's sensitivity to the natural beauty around her even in some of the toughest times. I really felt for poor Molly as she was tugged at by two cultures. Each was described well and without prejudice. I was glad that it showed love wins over all. Lois Lenski did the classic illustrations that I remember so fondly from my childhood. A really wonderful package.

Julie 01 Julie Of The Wolves by Jean Craighead George
    N, April 27, 2012
Working at the Children's desk at the library, I'm trying to read the Newbery award winners. Julie of the Wolves won in 1973 for good reason. I really enjoyed it. It is a wonderful tale of a girl on her own in the wilderness. Her struggles for food and companionship lead her to relationship with wolves. The story feels very real. I am eager to put this book into the hands of children here at the library. Especially good for anyone who loved My Side of the Mountain.

Lent for Everyone: Mark, Year B by N. T. Wright
    N, February 29, 2012
I haven't finished this as yet, but I wanted to share it before Lent is over. I have been using Lent for Everyone for my Lenten meditation. I'm setting my alarm earlier and getting up to have quiet worship. This book is truly wonderful. Each day begins with a Bible reading which is included in the book. No need to have a pile of books for your meditation. The reading is followed by a great homily to lend meaning to the passage. The day's reading ends with a prayer for the day. I find this really helps me to center and brightens my outlook on the day. I am very grateful that this book fell into my hands for this season. I will treasure it and use it over and over again.

Twelve Drummers Drumming A Father Christmas Mystery by C C Benison
    N, February 29, 2012
The cover is misleading this is not a Christmas book, but a delightful British cozy mystery. The wife of the central character, Tim Christmas, was murdered. He retreats with his daughter to a small village only to have murders happen there as well. I hope this writer will continue this series. I really liked the characters. I also hope that there will be some resolution to the murder of Father Christmas's wife. It was a wonderful read. Great company for a rainy afternoon.

Through the Year with Jimmy Carter 365 Daily Meditations from the 39th President by Jimmy Carter
    N, February 08, 2012
This is a great book of daily devotions. Through these Sunday school lessons of Jimmy Carter's we find depth in Scripture and a commonality with all people. Since the readings are not dated I feel free to spend extra time on a lesson that moves me. We hear homey stories and stories of great men and women. This is unlike any devotional I have ever encountered and I am grateful to have it in my library.

What a delightful read! Miss Buncle has no imagination. So when she must turn to writing (the maid dislikes chickens)she has only her village to draw on. Her book written under the pseudonym John Smith becomes a bestseller. Now what will the villagers do? will her cover be blown? Very fun and lots of laughs!

Secret Lives of Hoarders True Stories of Tackling Extreme Clutter by Matt Paxton, Phaedra Hise

A very compassionate view of hoarders. Maybe you saw the television show. I don't have TV so I read this book. It inspired me to get up and clear out. I don't think I fit his definition of a hoarder, though he does break it down to different levels of hoarding. Not just voyeuristic, it is a fascinating view of these people's lives and hints for family members who may have a hoarder in their lives. And encouragement for those who are starting to accumulate more than they can house.
