Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. Acorna the Unicorn Girl
by
Anne McCaffrey, Margaret Ball

Anne McCaffrey continues to uphold her reputation as one of the great science fiction writers of our time with this novel that gives a wonderful twist to the unicorn myth. When three asteroid miners find a baby girl in a strange escape pod they wonder where she could have come from. They also wonder at her strange physical differences; including cloven feet, furry legs and a tiny white horn. But soon the three dedicated bachelors find themselves too busy trying to mine their asteroid field and mind a baby to think any farther than maybe she's just different. But when they return to their station and the doctors decide there's more to their foundling than simple genetic abnormalities the three men grab their 'niece' and make a run for it. What follows is a delightful and dramatic tale of narrow escapes and strange encounters as the three miners run from what's chasing them. Only to find they've been running toward a destiny that holds more for them and their 'Acorna' than simple asteroid fields ever did.

Dragonsdawn: Dragonriders of Pern 6
by
Anne McCaffrey

Like all her novels, McCaffrey blends science and fiction with a good dollop of fantasy to send the reader to another world in the future. A world where man goes about the normal business of colonizing and taming their new planet. But when things don't work out the way they planned and the colonists suddenly find themselves in a race against extinction they must rely on their own ingenuity to use modern science to bring ancient myth to life from the tiny dragon-like natives of their new world.

Dragonflight: Dragonriders of Pern 1

Anne McCaffrey shows her true talent in this can't-put-it-down sci-fi masterpiece. Dragonflight opens up a whole new world of thinking when it comes to dragons. Read this one for the first time like I did and you'll immediately be looking for more of the Dragonriders of Pern.

The Dragon and the George: Dragon and the George 1
by
Gordon R Dickson

This was the first of Gordon R Dickson's books I've read and the minute I picked it up I was hooked. Since then I've read most of the Dragon Knight books and can't get enough of Dickson's clever twist of fantasy, history, comedy and adventure all rolled up in a misplaced, accidental wizard who got zapped to the middle ages and can't get back.
