Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Grammar Devotional

I am a fan of Grammar Girl and received tips via her newsletters already, but I decided to purchase this book for my classroom to use as a quick daily lesson on grammar. I have definitely been very pleased! It's organized in a quick and easy-to-use format that takes less than 5 minutes to teach my English students each day. They've found the lessons very interesting, especially when she gives the history behind why a certain rule is the way it is. I've learned some things along the way as well, and have had to correct previous rules I "thought" were incorrect because a teacher told me at some point I was wrong (such as using "till" rather than "'til" as an abbreviation for "until"--all are equally correct). Buy this book as a gift for the grammar stickler in your life or get it for yourself to learn something new about language; either way, you won't be disappointed with the purchase.

Wolf Hall

I feel like the traitor in the midst. I did not love this book overall. I did enjoy the last 200 pages or so, but prior to that Mantel's awkward use of "he" for Cromwell and lack of plot early in the story caused me to put this down and almost quit multiple times. I still don't see why this won the Man Booker prize (and I've loved other prize winners), but I am glad I plodded on to the end.
