Cradle Of Death
by
John Glatt
Audrey Starkey
, April 03, 2009
Cradle of death is a chilling account of a mother who not only killed 8 of her 10 children, but managed to avoid prosecusion for nearly 40 years. The author does a fantastic job of luring the reader into the world where one almost feels sympathy for the mother whose children are being taken from her by the insidious SIDS illness. One has to ask themselves "Why didn't anyone stop it!." In 1949 the first of 10 children was born to Marie Noe and died, apparently of SIDS at age 1 month. Whether that death was truly SIDS and triggered a psychological need to kill her remaining children l by l, or whether Marie suffered from post-partum psychosis remins unclear. What did become clear is that she killed each child, and managed to convince everyone, including physicians, that the children were victims of SIDS. She was showered with sympathy. Although family and friends became suspicious when every child succumbed to what was thought to be SIDS, the matter went virtually undetected until the 1990's. With the death of the last child, authorities began to open up the cases of the long forgotten siblings. Eventualy the mother confessed to have killed 8 of the 10 children. Readers who enjoy true crime will find the story compelling, well researched, and flows well.

Red Zone The Behind The Scenes Story of the San Francisco Dog Mauling
by
Aphrodite Jones
Audrey Starkey
, October 14, 2008
Red Zone is a perfact example of how the media twist facts of true crime incidents in order to sell their story. I have followed this story ever since the huge Dogs killed an innocent women who was delivering groceries into her apartment. The 2 dogs, who were definately too large to live in a small apartment, and were untrained and unmanaged, were only PART of the story. The owners of these dogs were attornies who were involved sexually, emotionaly and financially to an inmate who had been segregated in one of California's toughest prison. How these two acted, and how they used Attorney priveledge to engage in illegal practices was, to me, a crime that definately would have warrented their life without parole the jury gave them. However, the judge did throw out the verdict and decided to allow them to walk free. The book was well written, and explained how this couple came to own a pair of very dangerous dogs and never took time to properly train them. After exiting an elevator unleased, these dangerous dogs ran after an innocent women, mauling her into a bloddy, deadly mess. The author did a good job of providing back ground information, history of this breed, and the sicko lawyers who were at the root of the problem.

God's Brothel: The Extortion of Sex for Salvation in Contemporary Mormon and Christian Fundamentalist Polygamy and the Stories of 18
by
Andrea Moore-Emmett
Audrey Starkey
, September 24, 2008
was very impressed with the research into the various groups who practice Pologmy worldwide. This book has a map showing where these groups are thoughout the USA, and if they are Christian, Muslim or Fundamentalist Morman. She does explain that the Modern LDS church DOES NOT condone Pologamy, and explains why some groups continue to believe that this is the only way to heaven. The first part of this book is a history of Pologamy, and gives a summary of many groups and how and why they got started. She makes it very clear that this is not just a "Morman" occurance, but rather widely practiced in many religions. The second part contains 18 stories of women and girls from various groups who have chosen to withdrawal from this lifestyle, and have begun to speak out what their experience were, and how it affected them and their families. It is an eye-opening group of stories, allowing the reader inside the walls of the groups. The people who become involved in these groups come to a believe that this lifestyle will be an escape from the stressful way the modern American lives. It appears to be a close knit family, pulling their money together, avoiding outside stressors, and living a Godly life in order to obtain lasting life in the hear-after. Perhaps there are many groups who do practice the above: however, what this book tells is the stories where the system has gone corrupt, forcing girls as young as 12 into marriages, demanding they have a child a year, discarding males, and using the public welfare system to support the children. Education is withheld, and attempting to leave the groups can become a deadly game for the women and children. I recommend this book for anyone interested in studying this lifestyle because it tells stories of all religious pologmany groups, and you learn the actual stories of 18 from all different groups throughout the USA.

To Catch A Predator
by
Chris Hansen
Audrey Starkey
, September 16, 2008
When the Internet entered our homes, time-tested methods of parenting were suddenly outdated. Today parents must equip themselves with knowledge that was not available 20 years ago. To Catch a Predator teaches parents how to spot the real dangers facing our children today. This book expose the twisted manner in which preditors leur children into their web of lies, creating a danger unlike any we have ever seen. Actual cases are are explored. The twisted psychology of the men and women who prey on children through Internet use are explained, and the book also descrbes treatment options available for the predators. Parents would be wise to purchase this book, to become informed of not only the dangers, but how you can be sure your child is safe. The price of the book is a small investment when you compare what the knowledge could prevent.

They Did It with Love
by
Morgenroth, Kate
Audrey Starkey
, September 12, 2008
After Sophie's father died and left her a huge estate, Sophie and her husband decided to move from Manhattan to Greenish, Conn. In order to fit in, Sophie joins a neighborhood mystery bookclub. The book twists and turns around the 5 women and their husbands who are in the bookclub. After a couple of bookclub meetings, one of the women is found dead. Initially thought to be suicide, it soon becomes clear they were dealing with a Homocide. Alex, the husband of the dead women was the only suspect, but claimed adamantly he was innocent. Sofie, who had owned a mystery bookstore in New York, was known as an amateur sleuth and contacted by Alex to help prove he was innocent. Sophie plays detective, and works with the "real" detectives who are trying to prove Alex's guilt. Suspecions raise, and skeletons are brought out closets of these couples. The author did an excellent job of keeping the readers attention while intertwining the lives of the 10 people involved. Readers see inside the lives of the "rich and non-famous," and are given a surprised ending. I belive this book would be enjoyable for both men and women, and was a wonderful read for our bookclub. It is multi-layered which helped the discussion flow

When Men Become Gods Mormon Polygamist Warren Jeffs His Cult of Fear & the Women Who Fought Back
by
Stephen Singular
Audrey Starkey
, September 10, 2008
The author explains how the Fundamentalist Latter Day Saints (FLDS) church began. When people began following the teachings of Joseph Smith, and believed him to be a Prophet of God, they followed his teachings and were polygamists, because Smith told the people that a revelation from God told him that men were to take multiple wives in order to build up the kindom of God by allowing unborn soles bodies in which to incarnate. This continued until the United States outlawed multiple wives and began to imprison men who were practicing this. At that time the standing leader of the LDS (Mormons) said he had had a revelation from God that pologamy would no longer be accepted. Many men and women did not believe these revelations, and moved around hiding their pologmany. From this, two cities on the borderline of Colorado and Arizona were "born," and the people migrated to this region. Nestled away near the desert, this group lived in peace for years under the leadership of a President AND several men who made up the governing board of the FLDS church. Problems existed for women and children even with the governing body. Warren Jeff's was a man who liked to study Hitler, and how he controlled his victims. As the elder men died, Jeff's was put in as the current Prophet. Jeff's was able to disolve all the committee men, and ruled himself with no one watching what he was doing. Under his leadership, the people lived in total fear. All their money was taken and placed in a community fund that Jeff's controlled. Children were molested by Jeffs, both boys and girls, and it was not uncommon for him to knock on a member's door and demand they allow their 13 or 14 year old daughter to marry someone HE had picked out, stating that God directed him. During his reign, all pets were taken out of town and killed on one day, boys were kicked out literally on the streets for minor offenses in order to keep the young girls available to be married to old men. The police force, judge, county government, etc were all FLDS members and ruled by Jeffs. Men who complained were sent packing, and their wives and children were given to other men. Men, boys, women and young girls began to speak out, and eventually the FBI became involved. The author tells the story well, ending with the conviction of Jeff's for the rape of two 14 year old girls, and sodomizing a boy. It is well written, interestering, and answers a lot of questions that arose recently with the government taking 400 children from the compound.

Fleeced How Barack Obama Media Mockery of Terrorist Threats Liberals Who Want to Kill Talk Radio the Do Nothing Congress Companies That Help Iran & Washington Lobbyists for Foreign Governments Are Scamming Us & What to do About it
by
Dick Morris
Audrey Starkey
, September 10, 2008
Morris has written a book that gives the Americans something to think about before you punch that ballot in November. Although he does touch on what life under an Obama administration would be like, he also hits on present abuse of power in the Bush administration. I found the format of the book helpful. Each chapter is clearly a subject in and of itself. In each chapter, Morris explains the subject, then gives specific examples of where the political leaders have gone wrong. There are boxes separate in each couple of pages that highlight the most important points he is making. The end of the book have hundreds of references a reader could check to see if what he is writing is true. This book is NOT just about Obama as others have suggested. Morris has mentioned how Halliburten Corporation is taking advantage of OUR money by overcharging millions of dollars, demanding their employees are housed in a 5 star hotel in Iraq, and even charging the government 100. for each 15 pounds of laundry being done. Once chapter discusses how a known terriost was captured, kept in Cuba, then released because he used a false name, only to write letters and laugh at us while he began killing American soldiers. It opens your eyes to the TRUTH of many subjects, and how our tax dollars are being spent. I found the book fascinating, and gave me a point of reference of the issues, including illegal immagration, health care, social security, etc, and how Obama, Clinton, Bush and McCain have voted in the past. He mentions that all three - Clinton, Obama and McCain left their PAID JOBS in the senate to run for office, and never gets a cent docked from their pay!. I think I want that job!! If the reader can look at this book as a means to begin to question what canidates stand for, and use it as a starting point to truly study the policies, then maybe the right person will be put into office (if that is even possible in the selection this year). I highly recommend this book to anyone who is open and would like to read the proof of various subjects that will be discussed during the debates to come.

Calligraphy Of The Witch
by
Alic Gaspar De Alba
Audrey Starkey
, September 10, 2008
Rarely does a novel awaken all my senses, and stirs every emotion possible in the human soul. It is definately a story I will not soon forget, and definately will be remembered as one of my favorite novels. This is a historical novel which happens in the late 1600's during the famous Salem Witch trials. Concepcion is a bastard child born to a Mexican government official and an Indian mother. Abandoned by her mother in Mexico after she had been indentured to a nun convent, Concepcion runs away with a friend only to be seized by Pirates and taken to New England. She arrives in New England pregnant after being repeatedly raped by the ships Captain. The captain discovers her gift of calligraphy, renames her Thankful Seagraves, and sells her to a Boston merchant who plans to have her manage her father-in-laws farm while caring for the crippled man. Unable to speak English, deathly ill and terrified, Thankful gives birth to a daughter whom her owner's wife covets. For 8 years Thankful and her daughter are pulled between two worlds. Although she proves herself in her ability to care for the crippled man, learns to speak and write English and brings profits to the farm, she is considered unacceptable as a bi-racial servent who speaks a foreign language and is Catholic. Rebecca, her owners wife, slowly turns her daughter against her. Throughout the novel, Concepcion keeps a journal that she hopes one day will be read by the daughter she loves so much. The journal gives you insight into what life was like in the 1600's. When the hysteria of the Salem withcraft trials begin, Capcion's own daughter implicates her as a witch, sending her to the cold, filthy dungeons. The ending is bittersweet, creating a surge of emotions for readers.
