Powell's Staff: New Literature in Translation: December 2022 and January 2023 (0 comment)
It may be a new year, this may be a list of new books, but our love for literature in translation hasn’t changed at all, and we are so pleased to be enthusiastically recommending these recent releases. On this list, you’ll find a Spanish novel where controversy swirls around a Coca-Cola billboard...

Dandelion Hunter: Foraging the Urban Wilderness by Lerner, Rebecca
    rsklnkv, March 24, 2013
As a Portland native I was impressed with the spirit Lerner brings to her book. Great characters, great information, and a good description of valuable resources right in front of us that are generally taken for granted. I'm really looking forward to trying the coffee recipe listed in the back! Highly entertaining read and glad to see the author sharing this knowledge with the rest of us in the form of a well-written story.

    Embassytown by China Mieville
    rsklnkv, May 15, 2011
Fantastic. 'Embassytown' helps me revisit the same vein I so abused when reading Bas Lag books. This is in no way a criticism of the junk he dealt me with the last three works, but this one reminds me of what is was like the first time. The very first time. I was a little unprepared for this one after 'City & the City' and 'Kraken'. Good books, but this is something different. Yet again. I won't get comfortable with it all for the next time. I feel wonderfully foiled. In this book there are things that have brain parts and parts to fend off prey and there is language that can be interpreted but not understood and robots that decorate their homes. When reading it, I flipped back some pages to figure out what kilohours really meant. There are things here I'm still working out in my head and that's what makes me add stars to reviews or even write reviews. Addicting. I will take substance over the hollow exploits of space-marines any time. I am a fan of Science-Fiction: Books that challenge my ideas of particulars while allowing me a vivid trip to another place and time. China has always challenged my perceptions in regards to the subject matter at hand and has never failed to entertain me with his work. 'Embassytown' is certainly no exception.

The Funhouse Mirror by Robert Ellis Gordon
    rsklnkv, May 08, 2011
I read this book years ago and recently revisited it. A second read certainly doesn't disappoint. This is fine collection of stories that lays bare the raw emotion and turmoil of the prisoners mind. Gordon know his stuff here the stories he chose to include are nothing short of brilliant. 'Seventeen Fistfights Later' by Michael Collins, in particular, struck a cord with me. Gritty, sad, anger-inducing...I highly recommend this collection if you are interested in taking a peek into the belly of the beast.

Homage to Catalonia by George Orwell
    rsklnkv, August 31, 2008
In typical Orwellian fashion (see what I did there?) George gives us an entertaining romp through war-torn Spain. George joins up with anarchists, Communists, and a rag-tag band of glorious anti-fascists to fight the good fight. Orwells desciption of Barcelona when he arrives is absolutely brilliant and gives us a view into a part of Spanish culture that thrives today, even as Western influence gains ground. Did I mention that George gets shot in the neck and is forced to walk an insane distance for medical assistance? Recommended if you've enjoyed other books by Orwell.

Anarchy In The Ashes Ashes 3 by William W Johnstone
    rsklnkv, April 15, 2008
'Bloody anarchy' the blurb says. I'd laugh if I thought the author didn't believe this stuff...
