Piercing Bible The Definitive Guide to Safe Body Piercing
by
Elayne Angel
s0sn0wy
, August 06, 2009
The name of this book says it all. Not only does Angel offer sound advice for all types of piercings, but she gives cultural history, pre and post care instructions, information about body type and compatible piercings, health risks and management, sex and piercings, and information about traveling through airports or visiting the doctor with piercings that cannot easily be removed. She even offers advice to the frustrated parent. These are only a few of the many topics Angel covers in this 300 page Piercing Bible–there’s even an index for keyword searches. I purchased this book on a whim, even though I rarely ever do more than flip through a non fiction book, but I sat down to read a couple of chapters and discovered that four hours had passed and I had read most of the book cover to cover. Angle’s writing is thorough and informative, and it has broadened my opinions and clarified the misconceptions that I had of many body piercings. If you have been toying with the idea of getting a piercing, or have had many, or if you are a piercer yourself–this book will provide you with more than two decades of invaluable expertise.

This Boys Life A Memoir
by
Tobias Wolff
s0sn0wy
, October 30, 2008
This memoir reads like a novel--a very good novel. The prose is original and creative, and the story sheds a not so glorious light on the confusion and frustration of childhood. It takes a very brave author to write about themselves in such a forthright manner, especially when their choices can be perceived as falling far short of noble.

One Hundred Demons
by
Lynda Barry
s0sn0wy
, October 19, 2008
Sweet little book. The story is a nice collage of childhood memories and cartoons. I laughed several times throughout the reading, totally able to relate to several of the "demons." Lynda Barry spoke about this book at my university during the new student orientation and had us laughing the entire time. I now have an even deeper appreciation for her work after being able to hear her impersonation of some of the voices and other characterizations.

Adventures of Huckleberry Finn
by
Mark Twain
s0sn0wy
, October 19, 2008
Loved it. Absolutely loved it. Twain wrapped me into a world completely foreign yet an integral part of my cultural history. And unfortunately, while many of the situations are historic, they are still occurring today in similar shape and form. The horrifying experience with a violent parent who's sole desire is to profit from their children is not as uncommon as it ought to be, and the ignorance of racism still muddies every culture on earth. Huckleberry Finn is truly a timeless masterpiece

Lost on Planet China The Strange & True Story of One Mans Attempt to Understand the Worlds Most Mystifying Nation or How He Became Com
by
J Maarten Troost
s0sn0wy
, October 19, 2008
So I've been to China, and being rather sarcastic myself I laughed regularly throughout this book. Most of Troost's observations are spot on, if you don't mind the exaggeration. Exaggeration being what it is, the core message of this story echoed the five weeks I spent in mainland China. As far as literary analysis goes: Troost uses too many unnecessary adjectives, his thoughts wander, and he tries too hard to be funny. And the end was excruciatingly over dramatic.

The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao
by
Junot Diaz
s0sn0wy
, October 19, 2008
This novel was A-M-A-Z-I-N-G. The language is creative and visionary. The story is identifiable for every type of reader. This is a must read for any lover of literature. The only thing I can say that was a downer was my own lack of knowledge of the Spanish language. However, I give major props to Diaz, who made the general idea clear even if I didn't always understand the words written. This is a novel to be enjoyed countless times.

Drinking Coffee Elsewhere
by
Zz Packer
s0sn0wy
, October 19, 2008
ZZ Packer has a strong voice and the ability to convey surreal situations plausibly. I found myself locked tightly in the thick of the drama, but I felt the endings were a bit abrupt. By no means am I a fan of a tidy ending, but a bit more denouement would be nice.

Under The Feet Of Jesus
by
Helena Viramontes
s0sn0wy
, October 19, 2008
Viramontes has beautifully portrayed the fears inherent in a migrant worker's life as well as the trials and tribulations that are experienced by the multitudes of people enmeshed in extreme poverty. Under the Feet of Jesus is not just a story about the difficulties faced by this destitute family, but also a story about the ability for humans to triumph in their own humanity--through love and family connections. The experiences, thoughts, fears, and pleasures of each character were detailed through the third person omniscient point of view and very little dialogue was necessary to convey the story. Absolutely beautiful.
