Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Lie
by
Kultgen, Chad
t.magnuson
, June 08, 2009
The alarming truth about the lie is there may be a significant strata of powerful people trained in prestigous schools and gaining prominent positions in society who are more interested in sensual pleasure, manipulating others and living their lie than in making the world a better place. It's a Daisy Buchanan/ Great Gatsby kind of a world. Knowing such, perhaps we should all be thankful there are enough decent and clever folks around to keep the world turning. You sure won't find there ilk here. Every character in this book is a pathological tragedy. I read the book in three days.

Boy Electrician Revised Edition

I'm glad to see this 'classic' reissued. More emphasis needs to be placed on the 'fun' of science fundamentals for young people today.

Ancestors Tale A Pilgrimage to the Dawn of Evolution
by
Richard Dawkins

Who would Mr Dawkins be without a God to mock? The title of his new book reveals much, alluding as it does to a motley band of believers journeying to worship at Canterbury Cathedral.

Great book. The characters ring true. Mr Alexander's experience shows. My only problem with the book is it may not be fiction!!! Heaven help us, please. Ted Magnuson, author, The Moses Probe

Assault On Reason
by
Al Gore

The saddest part of it is how blatantly 'handled' the mouthpieces of the machine are. Where are the great statesmen of Old? Ted Magnuson, author, Those Self Evident Truths, from Runnymede to Gettysburg.

Give Me Liberty A Handbook for American Revolutionaries
by
Naomi Wolf
t.magnuson
, October 28, 2008
While a strong argument can be made that many people are sensing a loss of power, Naomi Wolf points it out well, there is much people can do to reclaim their choices and make life the best-Give me Liberty! Ted Magnuson, author, Those Self Evident Truths.

Big Brain
by
Gary Lynch

, July 17, 2008
Lynch and Granger do a great job bringing us up to date on the development of the brain. Where do we go from here? Public TV has a special on 'The World Wide Mind,' that speaks event today of blind people being able to see by having a camera hooked up to their optical nerves and the paralyzed being able to think words onto pages...Ted Magnuson, author The Moses Probe.

End of America A Letter of Warning to a Young Patriot
by
Naomi Wolf
t.magnuson
, May 29, 2008
With the media striving for more and more shock value, with those in public life more motivated by self-interest than community building, it is good to see Naomi Wolf stepping forward to set the record straight, encouraging readers to think for themselves and take a stand. After all the sacrifices our forebearers made, if they could, I'm sure they would jump out of their graves, and throttle some of the jokers who've put greed above grace. Naomi, you go! Ted Magnuson, author 'Those Self Evident Truths.'

Lottery
by
Patricia Wood
t.magnuson
, August 19, 2007
With his IQ one point above retardation Perry L Crandall wins millions in the Washington State Lottery. The reaction of his plain folk boatyard friends and his conniving plastic relatives tells a very compelling tale. Values such as friends, family, intelligence, 'common sense' and the standards we set for ourselves and others are seen through a new pair of eyes. A quick well written read. Grab it, you'll like it!
