A great blend of authenticity coupled with excellent writing to keep the reader's interest. A very enjoyable and well considered book. Highly recommended.

Dispatches

Having read extensively about the conflict in Vietnam, I would rate this as one of my top three books pertaining to the war in Vietnam. I would recommend this book to people who want to grasp something about the chaos and the conditions in Vietnam even though Mr. Herr was a reporter and not a foot soldier. His narration is excellent, he has a keen sense of detail, and avoids sensationaism. Dare I say he even delves into a bit of existentialism (as told to him by a infantryman). Overall an excellent book.
