Five Book Friday: In Memoriam
(0 comment)
Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. Pacific Northwest Foraging: 120 Wild and Flavorful Edibles from Alaska Blueberries to Wild Filberts

i've read several books on foraging the northwest and find this one by far the best. great detail: info about the plant's growth and habitat, how to use the leaf/stem/root/flower/fruit, encouragement on how to propagate or spread these valuable plants, clear pix and descriptions. the book is a sturdy paper back and small enough to carry in a large pocket on a walk in the woods.

Wild Color: The Complete Guide to Making and Using Natural Dyes
by
Jenny Dean and Karen Diadick Casselman

now, of course, the new edition is not yet available, so i can't say much about it. but i can speak to the quality of the 1999 edition. that book, now out of print, is by far the most useful book i have read on the subjects of growing and using dye plants. ms dean has managed to make the science accessible to the novice dyer with plain english. the technique pictures clearly show what the words describe. the color pictures showing results of a given dye on different fibers, or use of different mordants and modifiers are very helpful. i am a much better gardener than dyer, and i recognize that her descriptions of many dye plants and her growing instructions are valuable as well. i have already pre-ordered the new edition.
