Kelsey Ford: From the Stacks: J. M. Ledgard's Submergence (0 comment)
Our blog feature, "From the Stacks," features our booksellers’ favorite older books: those fortuitous used finds, underrated masterpieces, and lesser known treasures. Basically: the books that we’re the most passionate about handselling. This week, we’re featuring Kelsey F.’s pick, Submergence by J. M. Ledgard...

    Coraline by Neil Gaiman
    Amanda Townsend, October 21, 2014
This is a perfect read for the Halloween season - just the right amount of creepiness to set the tone, without scarring you for life. I recommend accompanying your read with some tea and a warm sweater - but try to keep away from one with buttons...

Fault in Our Stars by John Green
    Amanda Townsend, January 07, 2013
This is John Green's best book yet. It takes you through a range of emotions, and makes you think about death and what kind of life you want to lead. It's also the love story between two teenagers, but is so much more than that. It's definitely a book you will want to read twice, despite the hole it will leave in your heart.

Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius by Dave Eggers
    Amanda Townsend, August 06, 2012
You don't have to read this review. If you do, maybe just read the second half. Or really just the last sentence, it's all you actually need. This is the (mostly) true story of how Dave Eggers conquered the world with his younger brother, orphaned by cancer and propelled into the world of being owed everything. He hands you this tale on a platter full of original voice, chicken, and maybe some fruit. His pain is your pain. And yours and yours and yours. Narrating knowing that you will be reading this, he manipulates the structure of a novel, the structure of a page, a paragraph, a sentence. He sometimes engages in conversation with his characters about the book itself, about the sentence you are reading, the metaphor you missed. He wrote this book so that you, you reading this right now, would read it. Not because you need to read it, but because he needs you to read it. It relies on you George Steve Mary Sally to read it otherwise it won't work. It will change your life and everything will stay the same. This book is very good and you should read it.

Wildwood: The Wildwood Chronicles, Book I by Colin Meloy
    Amanda Townsend, January 01, 2012
This is a darling book, full of adventure and beauty. I've been a fan of the Decemberists for a few years now and have had the amazing opportunity to see them live in Portland, the city I love so much, and the city Wildwood was based on/set in. I went to art school in Portland, so I love the fact that the book has such gorgeous illustrations. I also lived quite close to this Impassable Wildnerness, so even without the drawings I can just see Prue and her companions in the forests of the Northwest. I feel like this book was made for me, but it's not something that only people like me can enjoy and love. The writing is as beautiful and creative as the illustrations, and the story is captivating. I read it in two days and can't wait to read it again, soon, and in the future to my own children.

Love Walked In by Marisa De Los Santos
    Amanda Townsend, September 01, 2011
This book and its characters are instantly love-able. This is not some cut-and-paste romance. You can't predict how things will turn out or where the most important relationship will happen. The book is charming, quirky, and fun to read but also incredibly moving.
