Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. One Secret Thing
by
Sharon Olds
Erica Reichert
, July 07, 2010
Sharon Olds' collections of poetry are always amazing, technically stellar, emotionally rich, and completely accessible. This collection is not quite as amazing as The Unswept Floor. The war poems are politically needed and right on target but leave something to be desired in execution. However, the poems chronicling the process undergone as she loses her mother are everything I could ever expect of such a masterful and seasoned poet. Truly amazing. All told, I still want to be Sharon Olds when I grow up.

Methland

~Methland: The Death and Life of an American Small Town~ is a very interesting read. I especially appreciated that the author connects the consolidation of union-busting food and agricultural big business and the business lobbying of big pharma with the deterioration of small towns in the U.S. Midwest and the proliferation of meth manufacture and sales. This is a must-read for anyone interested in rural American communities, labor and the economy, drug epidemics, and social policy.

Moosewood Restaurant Cooks at Home has been our family's "go-to" cookbook for the past 15 years. The recipes are absolutely delicious, vegetarian/vegan, healthy, and pretty easy if you plan ahead. The soup recipes are worth their weight in gold.

A fantastic overview of women's experiences of the HIV/AIDS epidemic from a more global perspective. Although slightly dated, still well worth reading.

Sexed Work: Gender, Race, and Resistance in a Brooklyn Drug Market
by
Lisa Maher
Erica Reichert
, April 17, 2009
With Sexed Work, Lisa Maher provides a stellar ethnography of female sex workers and drug users in a skid-row Bronx neighborhood. Furthermore, Maher presents an insuperable treatment of her subjects' complicated lives that balances their own agency with the context in which they make decisions. A top-notch work of feminist criminology and ethnography.

Absolutely amazing. The Unswept Room is one of Olds' very best. A must read for lovers of contemporary American poetry.
