Conjurer & Other Azorean Tales
by
Darrell Kastin

If you enjoy Salman Rushdie, Nikolai Gogol, and other magic realism writers, you'll definitely want to give The Conjurer a try. Darrell Kastin does an exceptional job of weaving extraordinary stretches of imagination in with slices of everyday life on the Azores. This collection of stories is exotic and outlandish yet strangely grounded by a timeless sense of folk history. Each story stands tall on its own merit; together, they craft a colorful narrative that defies categorization. Within these pages you'll find small miracles, grand impossibilities, and earthy wisdom all wrapped in the guise of a modest tale.

Hunger Games 01

I worried that this book couldn't live up to the hype; I'm happy to say, though, it's just as fabulous as everyone says. This is easily one of the best books I've ever read. Nothing about it falls down -- from plot to world-building, characters and imagery, this is pure brilliance. I only regret not buying the whole series at once.

The Restorer

This book started off pretty good--and ended up fantastic. It was thrilling, spooky, unique, and even surprisingly sexy. I can't believe I let this sit on my shelf, unread, for so long. I loved the main character, Amelia. She was strong, smart, and believable all throughout the story. I couldn't have asked for a better protagonist. And this was a wonderfully fresh type of paranormal fiction. I greatly enjoyed reading this, especially the last half. I'm immediately going out for the sequel.

Blood and Bullets

While this book does have some good stuff going for it, I only got about 50 pages in before I decided to pass. The writing style just didn't work for me -- too much describing and explaining got in the way of potentially great scenes, had the writer simply shown and not told.

Cant Buy Me Love

This was a really good book -- well-written, entertaining, and emotionally charged. I read it quickly, enjoying every moment. I was particularly taken with how skillfully the characters are developed, especially the main female protagonist, Tara Jean. There was a lot of subtly there, poignant hints at her back story, her journey, her psyche. Really, this author is very clever in how she spins a tale. I was definitely hooked, and I look forward to the next book in this series.

Demon Does It Better

This was a fun read, but it didn't rock my world. Things started off strong, held steady for most of the book, then weakened a bit in the last few chapters. Overall, though, I give this a thumbs-up. I haven't read the previous books of this series, but that didn't hinder my reading experience in any way. This book stands alone well, and references to past characters and plots just piqued my interest more. Speaking of characters, the protagonists of this book are all intriguing, appealing characters and are the true high point of the story.

Wicked Nights Angels of the Dark 01
by
Gena Showalter

With Showalter's previous books, I didn't have much interest in the angels and didn't care too much about their stories. But I should have known better than to doubt. "Wicked Nights" introduces a lively new group to Showalter's fabulously entertaining "Lords" crowd and lives up to what I look for from this author: extraordinary characters, well-developed storylines, cheeky humor, and a glorious dash of sex and violence. And, yes, the Lords make an appearance. Talk about a party!

Didn't love it, but it was entertaining enough. I am interested to see how the rest of the series plays out. I also appreciated the inclusion of some of Showalter's shorts -- particularly "The Amazon's Curse", which was brief and kinda cheesy yet enjoyable.

Bloodlines 01

Naturally, I was worried this this new spin-off wouldn't be able to withstand the shadow of "Vampire Academy", but I should have known better than to doubt. This book was great, and Sydney is just as compelling of a protagonist as Rose. I loved every page, and I'm incredibly anxious to get a hold of the second book.

A very intriguing book, indeed. I didn't always love it, true, but this was unlike anything I've ever read before -- and that fact alone makes this book extraordinary. This is a very visceral, completely fresh story that will strike a chord with anyone who thinks they've seen all there is to be had from the vampire fiction genre.
