Instructions for a Heatwave
by
O'Farrell, Maggie

I picked up Maggie O'Farrell's "Instructions for a Heatwave" as an afterthought when checking out another book at the library. This quirky story intrigued me from the beginning. The story of a dysfunctional Irish family living in London during the drought of 1976, it is both hilarious and touching. O'Farrell is a word-master, adroitly conjuring compelling images with figurative language that subtly reflects the Irish people: when the gregarious and determined mother Gretta accosts two fellow ferry passengers on a trip cross the Irish Sea, they "raise their heads, like startled sheep." Later, the extended family, in search of their missing father, climb into a small car: "By a concentrated feat of human origami, they have managed to fit into Michael Francis' car." I fell in love with this family and all their eccentricities. O'Farrell never tells us exactly how the story ends, but she leads us to the brink and trusts us to follow the trail ourselves.

Cloud Atlas A Novel

Epic undertaking! Interweaving stories/lives kept me on my toes and made the reading experience very rich. I haven't seen the film - I'm afraid it cannot do justice to the book. I highly recommend this dream sequence - it's a fabulous book!
