Through the Woods
by

Have you ever read a collection of short horror stories told in a graphic format? If not, here's your chance! Emily Carroll has put together a collection of creepy tales paired with lovely artwork that combine to make a fun, spine tingling read. I admired the drawings while getting spooked out by the classically scary stories and thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

El Deafo
by
Cece Bell
hedgehogs
, January 18, 2015
Cece Bell grew up wearing hearing aids which helped her hear better at school, but also made her feel isolated from the other kids that didn't wear them. Her memoir, told in a graphic novel format is a compelling, funny, and brightly colored rendition of her experiences. You'll laugh at Cece's misadventures with her phonic ear that allows her to hear things she probably shouldn't and cheer her on in her quest for a true friend. Bell's artwork is fun and her narrative does a superb job of shedding light on what it's like to grow up different when all you want to do is fit in.

The End of Men: And the Rise of Women
by
Hanna Rosin
hedgehogs
, January 03, 2015
Women aren't taking the backseat when it comes to high school and college graduation rates or getting ahead in the new economy. Women are making a lot of strides and are viewing the world and their place in quite differently than in years past. Men may not be the dominant sex any longer or perhaps it's at least fair to say that women are gaining on them. Hannah Rosin's book includes a great deal of research coupled with real world examples of this paradigm shift. While the critics of the book say its too optimistic, I look at it as a fascinating discussion on a trend that is happening on a global scale and gives us all a great deal to think about.

All My Puny Sorrows
by
Toews, Miriam

, December 29, 2014
I found this book through my Indiespensable subscription and I'm so glad I decided to sign-up! I was immediately drawn in by the frank writing style and unexpected humor. The setting, Canada, and topic, right to die, lend a lot to this book's appeal. I've talked about this book to everyone who will listen since reading it, and have put the author's other books on my to-read list.

Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell
by
Susanna Clarke

, December 29, 2014
This book has a delightful combination of magic, history, humor, and mystery. It reads like an English novel from the 1800s, but with charachters and a plot that appeal to a modern reader. You'll definitely want to read it all the way through and get wrapped up in the detailed world building along the way. A satisfying read you'll recommend to friends.

Gaston

Gaston, a bulldog, is switched at birth, but loves his family of poodles all the same and they love him. But then an opportunity comes along to fix the mistake. What will the families decide to do? Gaston is one of the best Children's books I've read in a long time. It has adorable illustrations, an engaging and heartwarming story, and it's funny! I love it so much, I bought a copy for myself and several more to give as gifts this holiday season to children and adults alike. Reading Gaston makes you smile and feel happy inside, so why not give it a try?

Tomboy: A Graphic Memoir
by
Prince, Liz
hedgehogs
, October 22, 2014
Graphic memoirs are my favorite kind of memoirs and this one is top of my list. Liz liked to dress like a boy and this caused her all kinds of problems growing up, but she stayed true to herself and then wrote this funny and well drawn graphic memoir to share with us. Read it! It'll make you laugh and you'll probably learn something about what it's like to grow up as a girl in the U.S. with all those stereotypes and expectations.
