Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. This book is unlike any comic i've ever read. visuals and text intertwine to create a novel about ideas that is also very human. it is about one man's world view as an architect and surviving twin, his thoughts on art, logic, and dichotomies, and the way he learns to finally become a fully-integrated human being. The book is very powerful, full of symbolism and parallels in story-line that make you want to go back and see what you missed.

One of my favorite children's books ever. Each fable is simple, yet powerfully true. These aren't boring didactic tales. Humor and beautiful illustrations make this a classic for kids and adults. I know I will keep this one with me forever.

True Notebooks A Writers Year at Juvenile Hall
by
Mark Salzman

This book was both intellectually and emotionally thought-provoking. It made me feel and question so many things that I had taken for granted - my freedom, ability to make choices, and access to creative expression. I think this book should be read by anyone who sees people in black and white terms - "Good" and "Bad," "Delinquent" or "Obedient." It certainly made me think about what leads juvenile offenders into the choices they make, and how important it is to allow them a way to vent their fear, frustration, and anger in a creative way in order to discover who they are. Mark Salzman steps back and lets the youths' writing speak for itself. Highly recommended.

Walk Two Moons

This book portrays innocence, simplicity, and feeling of wonder seen through the eyes of protagonist Salamanca Tree Hiddle. It also has sadness and confusion. But it's the mix of all these different emotions as Salamanca searches for her mother that make this one of the most touching books I have ever read. I first read it in high school, and have read it periodically now that I am in my late twenties. Whether you are a young adult or a "full-grown" adult, I would strongly recommend this book.

Country Year Living The Questions
by
Sue Hubbell

I loved this book. I find her collection of short personal essays very insightful and they had a calming effect on me. Sue Hubbell writes about her experiences as a woman living by herself in the Ozarks - day-to-day tasks, beekeeping, entomology, and observations on the natural world. Her writing style is very personable and she expresses herself with wit and humor. She even made me interested to learn more about bugs!
