Five Book Friday: In Memoriam
(0 comment)
Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. Marriage Plot
by
Jeffrey Eugenides
judy pilder
, January 02, 2012
Eugenides has accomplished the rare, beautifully crafted novel -- the one we hope for each time we open to the first page. And more. He has found the writer's words to tell of mental illness. Two gifts. The novel and the knowing.

Worst Journey in the World
by
Apsley Cherry Garrard

Never have I purchased a book AFTER reading it. THE WORST JOURNEY IN THE WORLD broke that record. I now own my own. This book is quite beyond words. It relates the 1910-1913 journey to Antarctica. Promoted as a quest to reach the South Pole for financial reasons (where have we heard that before), the expedition was to collect scientific information. Apsley Cherry-Garrard was one of three to venture in total darkness to find the breeding Emperor penguins. The support those explorers gave each other puts a new meaning to kindness. I read the book in summer--just one hundred summers after that dark journey for an egg. I will read it again in our only grey winter to come. Somehow, it is full of warm.

Matterhorn A Novel of the Vietnam War
by
Karl Marlantes

War is a horrid subject. Karl Marlantes knows that. His novel, MATTERHORN, brings the human, ugly reality to life. It is the finest book of war I have read.
