The Elegance of the Hedgehog

The "elegance" of this lovely little novel! It is an intelligent read, with many references to literature, music...the arts and popular culture in general. Mme. Renee Michel, the middle-aged concierge of an apartment building, and Paloma Josse, a precocious 13-year-old resident of the building, become unlikely friends, and the story of their relationship is sweet, without being syrupy. The story says much about class consciousness and conflict and a fading way of French life. I will read it again to better enjoy its many layers.

I honestly wanted to start over and re-read this book as soon as I had finished it! Never having been a great student of American and European history, I did not have a full appreciation of Adams' contributions to the founding of our country. McCulloough's work brings that period to life in a way that I had not encountered before. What a masterpiece! What a reading pleasure!
