by
Henryk Sienkiewicz

A very accessible story about the rise of Christianity in the Roman world, Quo Vadis presents a very realistic portrait of how Christianity took hold of the hearts and minds of Romans and altered Western civilization as we know it.

Reading this novel is like standing in a cold wind without a jacket. Exhilarating, at moments uncomfortable, but in the end an extraordinary moment in time.

Story of Philosophy The Lives & Opinions of the Greater Philosophers
by
Will Durant
Jennifer Gritt
, September 07, 2009
For those of you who have never treated yourself to the mind and writing talent of Will Durant, The Story of Philosophy is a great introduction to Durant's work. His ability to speak about great minds, great ideas, great concepts within in the broader realm of the history of human civilization is unmatched and the brilliance of his prose unequaled. Reading Will Durant is like being taught by a great master--it will forever change you and the way you see the world around you.
