Night Wraps the Sky Writings by & about Mayakovsky
by
Vladimir Mayakovsky
ahuckins
, July 22, 2011
This book combines Mayakovsky's poetry and biography into a fascinating introduction to the legendary poet's life, impact, and peculiar role in the making of the historical moment that is the 1917 revolution in Russia. Here, the opinions and expertise of writers, historical figures, and scholars are sampled with concise effectiveness, and the new translations of Mayakovky's poems are delightful. Upon finishing the book, I felt I would never be able to read enough by or about Mayakovsky to be satisfied- a blessing and a curse.

Decreation Poetry Essays Opera
by
Anne Carson

While this wasn't the undeniable page turner that "autobiography of red" or "glass, irony, and god" were, it was incredibly provocative and even more varied than her previous multi-genre collections. The final piece has me wishing Ms. Carson would go ahead and make a film!

Critical Theory Today A User Friendly Guide 2nd Edition
by
Lois Tyson
ahuckins
, December 11, 2009
This book is the most uncluttered way to learn about the various veins of literary theory. Its concise and informative introductions, sample criticisms all based on a single work, and lists of questions asked of a text by each theory all streamline students' progress: from their first encounter with theories to their ability to use them to think and write about literature. A+ resource for college undergrads and serious readers of all ages!

Equivocal
by
Carr, Julie
ahuckins
, October 06, 2009
Ms. Carr's writing has a way of encouraging its reader. Her poems demonstrate that poetry can be functional: it can mediate between being terrified to be a parent/woman/person and actually being one or all of those things. This book is serious, intelligent, and beautiful, which is refreshing since it is about regular life, which Carr proves can be all those things.

Ramona Quimby 06 Ramona Quimby Age 8
by
Beverly Cleary
ahuckins
, September 27, 2009
Ramona is a wonderful character, highly relatable for young girls who don't fit the stereotypes of female childhood. Her adventures are thoughtful and compelling, encouraging even her shy, bookish real-world counterparts to be themselves and confront the world with confidence. If I ever have daughters of my own, the Ramona series will certainly be a part of their library.
