Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Game of Character A Family Journey from Chicagos Southside to the Ivy League & Beyond
by
Craig Robinson

A Game of Character is a very heartwarming & inspiring book. It is a wonderfully written autobiography. Craig Robinson stepped into history's spotlight when he introduced his sister, Michelle, at the National Democratic Convention. This is not a political book. It tells the story of how Craig & Michelle's parents raised them on the south side of Chicago. I wish every parent would read this book. Marion & Fraser Robinson III were very caring parents who were motivating, optimistic, energetic, hardworking people. Everyone would love parents like them. They showed their children how to believe in themselves & live their lives with conviction through love, discipline & respect. The book gets its title from Craig's career as a basketball coach, currently the coach at Oregon State University. Craig tells how the lessons of character he learned at home were fundamental in shaping his career from street basketball on Chicago's Southside to Ivy League & beyond. I highly recommend this inspiring book.

Travel as a Political Act
by
Rick Steves

An inspiring book on how educational & thoughtful travel broadens our lives. Made me aware of how our world has become very connected. I highly recommend reading Rick Steves' "Travel as a Political Act". He takes you through Europe, Central America, Asia & the Mid East in ways you never even thought of. Even if you can't physically travel, it is wonderful arm chair travel with purpose. I felt like a student studying the world. Definitely 5 stars out of 5.

Julie & Julia My Year of Cooking Dangerously
by

Anyone who cooks, male or female, will enjoy this book. I loved the comparisons of Julie & Julia Child. I wasn't a Julia Child fan years back when she was very popular, but I am now. I enjoyed reading about Julie's very unusual way of challenging herself. This is a case of "Should one read the book first or see the movie first?" Both were excellent.

I've read this book several times. Then borrowed it out & it was never returned. I've forgotten who has it. I would like to read it again & share it with my 93 year old mother whose father came from Germany. Thank you.
