Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Pumpkin Pumpkin
by

This is one of the nicest pumpkin books around for young reader-listeners. Gently told, with soft pencil drawings (with something to find in each one), the simple story describes the pumpkin life cycle from a preschooler perspective. I read it every year to my preschool classes. They are fascinated, and learn about pumpkins!

Travels with a Donkey
by
Robert Louis Stevenson
Viviann
, April 19, 2013
Still as fresh as when it was written in 1878, maybe more so given today's frantic pace, this short memoir of a walking journey through the mountains of southern France is full of arm chair travel charm, vividly bringing to life the adventures of camping with a donkey, encounters with the people met on the way, and general observations by a compelling author, Robert Louis Stevenson.

I love this book. So relevant, so funny, so inspirational. (Apparently there is a parallel universe.)

Sensational Knitted Socks
by
Charlene Schurch
Viviann

This book is sensational! It has clear explanations, patterns with directions for knitting with dpns, 2 circulars and 1 circular, AND it teaches how to choose elements you like in constructing perfect-fitting socks with the yarn you like. If you are into figuring out sock construction for custom socks, this is the book for you. If you aren't, it's still a great book. Go for it!

Cleopatra A Life

I love it. History made easy with juicy gossip about other writer's perspectives as well as Cleopatra herself, and reliable notes to back it all up.

Blue Nights
by
Joan Didion
Viviann
, January 19, 2012
Joan Didion can write, as her husband told her in "The Year of Magical Thinking," an account of the first year of her widowhood. Here she goes after what may seem a more macabre subject: loss of her daughter, of time past, and of functioning that comes with aging. She examines the grief brought by time's passage from an honest and very personal perspective, which turns out to be a lot shorter than Proust. Nonetheless, it packs a punch, on topics not quite taboo, but not widely addressed, as it opens a window on her life.

wonderful pictures, touching story. We need to have more points of connection with people in the middle east, and this book paves the way for young children and their parents.
