Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Wordy Shipmates

I was expecting a rather dry reporting of letters written by the Puritans making their way to the new world. Instead, I was pleasantly surprised by the wit, humanity and often humor in these pages. Ms. Vowell takes history out of the dusty drawers of time and makes it come alive. This is definitely not your average elementary school history of the first Thanksgiving. Along with the idealism and hope for a better life, there is war, murder, injustice and a great deal of irony. This is a highly entertaining, informative and disturbing book. I highly recommend it!

Wise Mans Fear The Kingkiller Chronicle Day Two

This is a continuation of the adventures of Kvoth begun in "The Name of the Wind". Although the book is rather long, it needs to be to hold all the adventures and exploits Kvoth is involved in. It is a marvelous tale full of mystery and mayhem that takes place in a rich tapestry of a world. I am very much looking forward to a continuation of the tale.

Tassajara Bread Book

I had forgotten what the cover of this book looks like! My copy is over 30 years old, the covers fell off many years ago and the pages are splotched with drips and spills. Not only has it provided me with many great recipes (I especially recommend the orange-whole wheat hotcakes), but has also helped define my philosophy of cooking, eating and serving others.

This is definitely not a Disney fairy-tale, it is closer to the Brothers Grimm, full of gruesome and bloody scenes. All is not black and white, either. You don't know if the good guys win in the end, or even if there are good guys and bad guys. Still, its a wild ride and a fun read, and Peter's laugh is indeed most contagious.

This book practically jumped off the shelf into my hands! I read it in two days. It is a heart-warming and heart-wrenching account of how people can face and deal with the trials and challenges life hands them and still come out intact.
