Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

This is a true and moving story of the horrors of the Holocaust. I believe that reading about tragedies can help us prevent history from repeating itself. Told from the perspective of a young man in the Holocaust, our privileged minds are not able to imagine the horrors these victims endured. This book is must-read classic for any student older than elementary school. Even if you are not a fan of grisly historical books, I would recommend you read this. You can't fully understand history until you see it through the eyes of someone who was there.

Da Vinci Code

Dan Brown

Mystery, suspense, and action on a journey through time and art. The Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown. A religious scandal covered up for centuries has been unveiled. Robert Langdon, a Harvard professor of religious symbology is unwillingly launched into into a quest to discover the truth of the Holy Grail. The Louve museum plays a key role in this intelligent novel. If you are hesitating to read this book because of your religious affiliation, what you should know is that this book is a work of fiction and not being passed off as fact. I would recommend this to anyone who likes books that challenge you to think beyond what you believe you already know. You end this story feeling very attached to every character. From a British scholar who has something to hide to an albino monk who kills for his religious beliefs. If I could, I would give The Da Vinci Code six stars.

An assistant pig-keeper? How can that make an exciting book!? You may be wondering that as you read the summary on the back of 'The Book of Three,' but you'd be surprised to know that the assistant pig-keeper himself agreed with that thinking. Taran, a unique boy, had the bravery of someone who had been through much more than he himself had, this does nothing but aid him when this pig-keeper sets out on the adventure of any life time. The themes in this story are mostly saying that anyone could be a hero. Adventurous and unique, 'The Book of Three' will hold your attention over and over again.
