Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. Orphan Train

I rarely give a book 5 stars and my criteria for rating is different with each book. I originally picked this up because the author is from Maine, my home state, and it is on the bestseller lists. It was easy to develop an affection for these characters and to believe the growing connection between the two orphans, the elderly lady and the young girl. I am always impressed when an author can create a triumphant story from a very sad topic and I loved learning about a little-known part of American history. It is one of those books that I feel requires very little analysis, but leaves you feeling good.

The Angels Game

Like "Shadow of the Wind", "The Angel's Game" is a darkly atmospheric novel full of good and evil. I love how Ruiz Zafon's story makes my brain work. Who is good and who is evil? Is David, the protaganist, an innocent vicitm or is his life falling apart because of his own ego and obsessions? The supernatural undertones add so many more "what ifs?" I was thrilled by the return visit to the Cemetery of Forgotten Books and several days after finishing the book, I am still thinking about all of the wonderful and/or sinister books buried there. How many authors sold their souls to create the books hidden there and what havoc could they cause if they were unleashed on the world? Ruiz Zafon's writing and plots are both excellent. I am always so thankful for a book that really makes me think and leaves me with a sense of wonder.
