Five Book Friday: In Memoriam
(0 comment)
Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Little Bee

I don't know much about writing, but, like all of you, I know a great book when I can't put it down while reading it and can't stop thinking about it when done. Reading Little Bee is such a rich, rewarding experience that I feel like I should write Chris Cleave a thank you note. So here it is.

This is so unlike 'Everything is Illuminated", which i loved, but I was pleasantly surprised. Both books are creative and moving, but as an elementary school teacher, I couldn't help but admire 9 year old Oskar's strength through adversity. Read this.

Her Fearful Symmetry

How can the same person have written The Time Traveler's Wife, Three Incestuous Sisters, and Her Fearful Symmetry? All brilliant, granted, but all so unique. I am in awe of this woman's brain, and the fact that she clearly uses more of it than the average human.

The Brambles

This is not an easy book to love. It is slow out of the gate. It is nothing like the beloved, "The Tiny One", but Minot's second effort grows on you, and you are well-rewarded for your patience. This is a wonderful book.

Julie & Julia 365 Days 524 Recipes 1 Tiny Apartment Kitchen

Fantastically satisfying read, and I don't even cook. Ever. We get to eavesdrop on an insane cooking project and a marriage; both described with brutal honesty, while somehow remaining witty as hell. At the same time we learn about the wonder that was Julia Child, and the unlikely love affair she had with French cooking and her wonderful husband.
