The Book Thief
by
Markus Zusak

I loved this book! As with any book that gets a lot of thumbs up and hype, I am always a bit skeptical that it is really as good as everyone says. Well, in this case, the hype was totally right. Not a typical novel surrounding Nazi Germany, the story is both inspiring and heartbreaking. Experiencing the joy of a young girl's discovery of the written word is especially poignant. It becomes her anchor in a world that is uncertain every day. Zusak uses a clever narrator...Death. An appropriate choice considering the amount of lives lost during World War II. As usual, the Nazis' treatment of the Jewish people is shocking and sickening. I could go a million years without having to visualize those actions in my mind. As usual, when a book effects me in such a way that it makes me cry, it is an automatic five stars. But do not let the sadness dissuade you from reading this book. It is also a story of hope and, ultimately, personal triumph.

Promised Valley Rebellion
by
Ron Fritsch

I really liked Promised Valley Rebellion because of how Ron explored the differences between the hunting/gathering society and the societies of the farming towns and animal herders, showing that these societies coexisted for a time and that there was animosity between them. It is an interesting exploration of prehistoric life wrapped up with elements of conflict, love and lust.

A Game of Thrones: A Song of Ice and Fire 1
by
George R R Martin

As historical fiction and fantasy are two of my favorite genres, the book appeals to my love of both. And what can I say about the characters? They are so richly drawn...so fully fleshed out, that it was almost like they were breathing beside me as I read. These are characters that I bled with, wept with, and mourned for. Characters I loved so much that when something bad happened I was filled with rage and wanted to throw the book across the room--or go inside the book and throttle the person responsible! While I badly wanted to finish reading it, as I approached the end, I did not want to let it go. And it has one of the most spectacular endings ever! I am not the type that picks up the next book in a series immediately (often going months or years between books), but in this case, it's going to be very hard to resist. If you have not read A Game of Thrones yet, I have to ask you. What are you waiting for?!

Queen by Right
by
Anne Easter Smith
Michelle Miller
, June 28, 2011
Cecily Neville, mother of kings Edward IV and Richard III, is one character that will be hard to forget. I am fond of headstrong women who bucked the conventions of their day and in this instance, Cecily did not disappoint. I have studied history and read books on English history, but seldom do we learn of seemingly minor persons as Cecily. I am glad that Ms. Smith decided to write a novel with Cecily as its central character because the woman she portrays is truly fascinating. A new to me historical fiction author, Anne Easter Smith has written an outstanding novel. She introduces a historical figure who has not been historically explored in depth and it leaves me wanting more. I look forward to the next figure Ms. Smith takes her pen up to write about.

My top read of 2009! This book turns the whole vampire genre on its head. It makes vampirism gritty and yet sympathetic. This is a must read for anyone who loves horror and likes their vampire stories scary.

Queen Of The Damned
by
Anne Rice
Michelle Miller
, February 08, 2010
This is my favorite book. Yes...number one on my list! I have read it three times. For me, it is more than a book about vampires. Rice really writes vivid historical details about the vampires. These details--a true historic beginning for the vampires--are what make her vampires more compelling. Please do not judge this book by its movie. The movie did not do this book justice!
