Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. This book does what all great books do: it makes one think. A fascinating look at how thoughts and ideas can change the world.

Ratking Aurelio Zen 01

Michael Dibdin

You'll want to get to know Aurelio Zen better. After seeing one of the PBS episodes on Masterpiece, I bought this book, which I believe is the first in Michael Dibdin's Zen series, and was not disappointed. During his time in Italy, Dibdin, an Englishman, developed a keen understanding of the cultural nuances and the bureaucratic idiosyncrasies that color Italian life. Ratking is a finely plotted detective story, full of surprises and well-developed characters. I couldn't put it down. But I'm ready to delve into the next one now!

The Elegance of the Hedgehog

Wow. This book has made it to my "all time favorites" list. Both the author and the translator deserve praise for their incredibly beautiful and precise way with words. It's not a fast read by any means - the sentences are so artfully crafted, so lyrical, that you'll want to re-read them a few times before moving on. A friend asked me "What's it about?" and I had a hard time answering her -- it's about so many things: the disguises we wear for the outside world; the love of art and literature; tolerance and classism; self-discovery; fear vs. joy....so many things. Just wow.
