Kelsey Ford:
Twelve Days of Horror
(0 comment)
While putting this post together, I realized that the original song this is based on, “The Twelve Days of Christmas,” needs very little amending to become horrific: why is someone gifting their lover so many different kinds of birds? That can’t be safe? But we love notching the horror up whenever we can, so in our version of the song...

Blackout Newsflesh Book 3
by
Mira Grant

, May 30, 2012
Awesome end to a great trilogy! Just like the first book, Feed, Blackout made me cry and totally had me guessing until the end. There is much more to this series than just zombies. It is about people dealing with problems the best they can. Isn't that what most of us are doing, except for the part where you need to run from zombies?

Destiny of the Republic: A Tale of Madness, Medicine and the Murder of a President
by
Millard, Candice
Katie Walker
, January 23, 2012
When I pick up Destiny of the Republic, I never thought I would find myself so invested in the story of James Garfield's life, and death. His short Presidency, in my opinion, made him little more than a footnote in the history of the US, but as I read, I discovered a deep admiration for a man who never aspired to the highest office in the US and began to feel an abiding sadness that his life, and Presidency, was cut so short. Destiny of the Republic is a gripping, heartbreaking read. It's well written and will keep anyone who loves a good drama engrossed from beginning to end.

47 Echo
by
Shawn Kupfer
Katie Walker
, March 25, 2011
1. 47 Echo is one of the most unputdownable books I have read in a long time. At first I was a little hesitant to start reading. With a premise that convicts are given the option of death or being impressed into the armed forces to fill ranks being rapidly depleted by a war with China and Korea, I figured the book would be ultra violent and disturbing. BUT 47 Echo wasn’t at all what I expected. It ended up being a great military thriller about redemption in the face of sure death.

Grimspace Sirantha Jax 01
by
Ann Aguirre
Katie Walker
, January 13, 2011
Grimspace is a witty SciFi novel which is a cross between Babylon 5 and Star Wars. The main character Sirantha Jax is a carrier of a rare gene allows her to pilot spaceships through the space between worlds, grimspace. After an accident leaves her the sole survivor of a horrific crash, she is ruthlessly interrogated by her employer, who want to blame the incident on her. A mysterious band of fighters breaks her out of her prison and offers her chance to redeem herself by starting an underground movement against her employer. Reluctantly, Jax joins the band and havoc insues. The novel has wonderful pace and humor. I was a little worried that Aguirre wouldn't be able to keep these qualities through the whole book, but I was delightfully surprised again and again when she did.

Child 44
by
Tom Smith
Katie Walker
, January 13, 2011
This book was an amazing read. It surprises me that more people haven't been raving about it. Set in 1950's Communist Russia, the book tells the story of Leo Demidov. Working for the State Security Force, Leo stumbles across the murders of several children and comes to the conclusion that it work of a serial killer. The problem is that in Soviet society serial killers can't exist. This type of crime is considered the result of a deviant western society, not the more evolved worker's paradise. Moved by the horror of the crime and events in his life, Leo risks everything to track down the culprit and stop the murderer's vicious spree.

Ghost Country
by
Patrick Lee
Katie Walker
, January 09, 2011
Before I say anything about Ghost Country, I have to say that if you haven’t read the previous book, The Breach, I highly recommend you do so. While Ghost Country can be read without its predecessor, the story in The Breach adds richness to Ghost Country’s plot. Besides, The Breach is great book. What struck me the most about Ghost Country was that I had no idea where the plot was headed; it was constantly twisting and turning. The unpredictability kept me engrossed and wanting to know more. Add to this, the sheer action. The first chapter started with a motorcade being attacked and most of the passenger executed. How can you not get sucked in by that? Ghost Country continues what Patrick Lee started in The Breach. Both are great books, but Ghost Country is much more satisfying in the end. I can’t wait to see what Lee has in store next. The posibilities are endless.

Pawprints of Katrina: Pets Saved and Lessons Learned
by
Cathy Scott
Katie Walker
, January 05, 2011
Pawprints of Katrina tells about the months Cathy Scott spend as an embedded reporter with Best Friends Animal Society as they rescued animals from the devastation of New Orleans in the months following Hurricane Katrina. The stories of the animals, their caregivers, and the families looking for those pets left behind were just poignant - heartwarming and heartbreaking. This book is proof that there are angels among us.

Heart of a Soldier
by
James B. Stewart
Katie Walker
, January 04, 2011
Most people would probably ask, "who is Rick Rescorla?" and I would have to say that he was a courageous human who gave his life so that other would live. You see, Rick Rescorla was one of the thousands of people who died when the two towers of the World Trade Center collapsed on September 11. What makes Rick different is that he could have left, but he choose to look for people in the south tower who remained trapped in the building. On 9/11, Morgan Stanley Dean Witter had 3,700 employees working in the World Trade Center Complex, 2,700 in the south tower. Rick was the VP for Security for the company and after the 1993 Trade Center bombing, he made sure that all employees knew what to do in an emergency. When the first plane hit the north tower, Rick, despite the Port Authority messages otherwise, started to evacuate. He kept people calm and moving, even singing to them as they traveled down dozens of floors. In the end, of the 2,700 people from Morgan Stanley Dean Witter in the south tower, only 6 employees and 6 contractors died, including Rick Rescorla and three of his deputies. It does my heart good to know that there are people who would sacrifice so much that others may live. That is the one good thing about 9/11 - while we saw the blackness of the human heart, we also saw the heights to which the human spirit can soar.

Total Eclipse Weather Warden 9
by
Rachel Caine
Katie Walker
, January 04, 2011
Final book in the Weather Warden series. But it was good to have a satisfying ending to Joanne and David's story. The two of them have been through so much heartbreak and drama since they first met in Ill Wind; they deserve a rest. I laughed. I cried. I will miss Joanne, David, and Lewis. The good news is that the Weather Warden Universe still has life with the the outstanding Outcast Season series.

Wild Boy My Life In Duran Duran
by
Andy Taylor
Katie Walker
, January 04, 2011
Truthfully, I wasn't going to read Wild Boy. I figured that this book was going to be nothing but Andy airing all of the dirty laundry to get even with a band he left, not once, but twice. If the book was like that, I didn't want to read it. But then I saw something a friend wrote about the book and thought why not give it a shot? I have to say that I was happily surprised that Wild Boy had a wonderful positive, honest tone. Andy was quite candid about the history of Duran, including his and other members' drug abuse. While there was nothing too shocking in the book, there were ton of interesting anecdote which kept me engrossed from beginning to end. If you want to read about life inside Duran Duran, read this book. You won't be disappointed.

Andromeda Strain

Michael Crichton

The Andromeda Strain is old school Sci Fi. Well written and gripping, the story holds up 40 years later. The only problem with the books is the ending. It was completely unsatisfying ending for such a good book.

Deep Six: Dirk Pitt 7
by
Clive Cussler
Katie Walker
, January 03, 2011
Let me start by saying that I liked Deep Six, but it was the most preposterous story ever. Most action/adventure stories ask for you to suspend your disbelief, but this one was beyond. The whole book centered on a plot by a Korean family and the Soviet government to kidnap the President of the United States and brainwash him to favor pro-Soviet policy. During the kidnapping the Vice President, Speaker of the House and President of the Senate are also captured. With the first four men in the line of succession missing, a massive cover up was undertaken to keep world from finding out the US's security failure and to recover the missing leadership. I spent a lot of time going "yay right" while reading, but I still liked the book. I just wish it would have been more believable.

Lorien Legacies 01 I Am Number Four Movie Edition
by
Pittacus Lore
Katie Walker
, January 01, 2011
First of the Lorien Legacies. This is the story about a group of children sent to Earth when their planet is attacked. Now the children are being hunted by the very creatures that destroyed their world. The first three children have been found and killed and number four is this next target. I really enjoyed this book. There was an interesting story, but the best part was that they named the dog Bernie Kosar.

Feed Newsflesh Book 1
by
Mira Grant, Seanan Mcguire
Katie Walker
, January 01, 2011
The best part of Feed is that the book isn't what it seems. Feed comes off as typical zombie tale, but turns into a story of political intrigue. The dynamic and engaging characters further invest the reader into a tale full of twists and turns. Feed is one of the best books I read all year and I can't wait to read the next book in the series, Deadline.

The Babylonia Codex is a fast thrill ride which keeps you on the edge of your seat. Sure the story isn't the most original in a world full of Steve Berry and Dan Brown, but it sure is a fun book and you'll find it hard to put down.

Best book in the series so far. Allie is one of the best urban fantasy heroines out there. She is multi-dimensional and just plain kick butt. The supporting cast are just as interesting as Allie. If you haven't read the Allie Beckstrom books, you are missing out!

I loved the way this book just sucked me into the story. There were times when I could have sworn I was going to turn on the TV and see news about zombie attacks. Definitely, one of the best books I have ever read.

Last Dragonslayer 01
by
Jasper Fforde
Katie Walker
, November 26, 2010
This book is worth reading just because it has the best two last paragraphs I have ever read. I had to read them twice and I still smile when I think about them. Jasper Fforde's works are some of the most clever books out there. They contain wit and joy in every word. Not a lot of books have that these days.
