Harper C.: Five Book Friday: Uncanny Graphic Novels (0 comment)
We are in the thick of winter here in the Pacific Northwest, which means it's dark, damp, and chilly. Rather than escaping to stories with warmer, brighter climates, I personally want nothing more than to dive deep into gothic and uncanny fiction as the wind rattles my windows at night...

    Crash Course by Julie Whipple
    amara, May 10, 2018
If you just read the above synopsis/reviews and did not run right out to buy this book, well . . . please go back and read that part again! This book is a page-turner! My emotions ran the gamut from amazement to tears, from outrage to cheers. It was meticulously researched, and since her father was the attorney that defended one of the crash survivors, Julie had the inside scoop on all the airline’s dirty little “profit-over-safety” tricks that lead to this tragedy. Remember that name, “Julie Whipple.” As an award-winning journalist, this might be her first book, but it sure won’t be her last!

I Am the Word by Paul Selig
    amara, October 17, 2010
This book blew the top of my head off! I mean that in a good way. My daughter is also reading it. This is how she describes it: "Reading this book reminds me of a scene from an adventure/fantasy movie where the character opens the big creaky book and a blinding light comes shining out on to their face, a light they can still see with eyes closed, and then magical things start happening." There has been virtually no promotion of this book, no advertising, no Oprah media buzz. It's the kind of thing you are either just led to, someone gives you a copy, or it falls off the bookstore shelf at your feet as you walk by. When that happens, fasten your seat belt. You're in for a ride!
