Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

I have again finished reading this book! Pretty sure it solidified my desire to teach...although I am sure Christy's life in Cutter Gap is far different than my Portland classroom. Everytime I read this book I am struck by something new and can't wait to read it again. Reading it as a girl, I always related to a school kid. As an adolescent I related to Ruby Mae. During teacher courses I related to Christy, and now as a teacher, it always reminds me to remember where kids come from before judging where they are going.

Such a great story. My kids loved every page! A Sick Day for Amos McGee has great pictures and a simply lovely story. There is a character for everyone. After you finish A Sick Day for Amos McGee get out Goodnight Gorilla and share how the books are the same/different. Happy Reading!

Knuffle Bunny Free An Unexpected Diversion

Knuffle Bunny is the stuffed animal and Trixie is the girl who loves her. This story was so sweet and a fabulous conclusion to the Knuffle Bunny books. It reminds me of my favorite comfort toy, and the day I realized I didn't need it anymore. All three of the Knuffle Bunny books are great! I read them for pleasure, for teaching kids about reading/writing good stories, and then read them all again! Mo Willems is a master story craftsman!

Kathy delivers again! Threads of poetry, narrative, and myth weave together in a story that keeps readers hooked through each page. Who would have thought a girl, a mermaid, some dogs, a cat, and a blue moon gumbo were all the ingredients needed for pure adventure. Waiting to the end to see how all the characters intertwine was magic.

Fantastically clever book. While reading, I tried imagining which character I was most like, and then the end had a surprise quiz. After answering the questions you could find out which character you would be.
