Seeds of America 01 Chains

Chains By: Laurie Halse Anderson “Melancholy held me hostage, and the bees built a hive of sadness in my soul,” are the words spoken by a slave named Isabel. Many of us know what slavery is: African Americans who were brought from Africa, treated poorly, owned, and put hard to work. But what most of us don’t know is what slavery was like through the eyes of a slave. In the book Chains, Anderson shows us just this with intense scenes and pages that will have you on the edge of your seat. Isabel is a slave who has just been bought to the Lockton family who happen to be Loyalists at the time of the Revolutionary War. Since she is owned by Loyalists, Isabel eavesdrops and learns the secrets of British invasions arising and holds on to the little hope that by revealing these secrets to the Patriots, she will win her freedom and independence. Through the struggles of being beaten and terrorized by her master, she remains strong. The main theme of this book is definitely slavery and courage. Chains starts out pretty slow, but once you give it a chance it’s impossible to stop reading! I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys reading books that leave you pondering what will happen next.

Charlie St. Cloud: Charlie St. Cloud: A Novel
by

"I believe in miracles" is how Charlie St. Cloud begins. Miracle is definitely the word to describe this book. In this book Charlie is a teenager with a lot going for him, but in one unfortunate event of his brother's death, his life takes a turn for the worst. After having a hard time moving on, he meets what he pictures the girl of his dreams who helps him ease out of his state of shock and shows what else the world has to offer. The story doesn't happily end there, Charlie faces more tragedies. Without spoiling this book, I can definitely say that the moral of this book is no matter the circumstances, don't give up, miracles are around just around the corner. I was introduced to Charlie St. Cloud be the movie and to tell the truth, I didn't have too high of expectations for the book. But even within the first few pages, I was wide eyed and amazed. Charlie St. Cloud is great and I would recommend it to anyone who is willing to shed a few tears and enjoys a book full of hope.
