Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Neverwhere

Neverwhere is the first Neil Gaiman book I ever read. It's entertaining, compelling, dark, funny, spooky... I love it. The characters are original and the world is fascinating. It's like places and creatures in dreams. It's not just fantasy though, there are anchors about - the protagonist is a guy who is confused by this dark universe he has been thrust into from his safe cubicle. He gets to learn a lot about himself as he faces pretty scary situations. Read it already... Yes, this book made me a Gaiman fan.

Mansions of Madness Game

Fantasy Flight Games

This game is a must for any HP Lovecraft fan OR a choose-your-own-adventure lover. You get to explore a haunted house, try to solve a mystery, battle monsters, unlock puzzles, and yes, occasionally roll a multi-sided die. One player acts as a "keeper" and tries to beat the other players who work together to solve the mystery. There are many stories included in this game which allows for multiple replays... I can't wait for the next game night!

And the Pursuit of Happiness
by
Maira Kalman

A great book sits on my coffee table! Have you seen it? Originally this collection was presented as a blog series in the New York Times and now as a wonderful book of (mostly) illustrations from Maira Kalman. This book takes you through an entire year's worth of exploring American democracy in imaginative and personal ways. She falls in love with Abraham Lincoln, for example. I keep it around and flip through when I need inspiration...Really makes me want to travel to all of these historic landmarks. Highlight: Kalman visits the Pentagon and writes "I wonder, why does the building have to be as bland and as soulless as a hospital? Have they not seen any James Bond movies? Would it kill them to have some style?"
