Year of Wonders

I put this off for a long time because the subject sounded so depressing. But the book is not depressing--Brooks has an amazing way with words, and characters, that is a delight even when the topic is grim. And she never loses sight of the little touches of humanity.

Stellar worldbuilding, intimate characterization of both humans and aliens, and some of the most mind-blowing ideas in science fiction... this book is wonderful on every level, and my favorite read of 2011.

People of the Book

Brooks traces the stories of those who owned the Sarajevo Haggadah within the framing story of the woman restoring it. Empathetic and exquisitely detailed. I'm Jewish, and this did what haggadot are supposed to do--made me feel that I was living the stories of the people in it.
