Chicken in Every Yard The Urban Farm Stores Guide To Chicken Keeping

Though you can find a lot of really useful information online about raising chickens; I found this book very helpful. I recommend it to anyone thinking about getting chickens to read in advance and make sure you know what you are in for. It's written with a good sense of humor making it not only informative, but also enjoyable.

The Age of Miracles
by
Thompson Walker, Karen
Penni4
, January 06, 2015
I picked up this book because a friend happens to know the author and this same friend knows I enjoy dystopian books so they thought I would enjoy reading this one. I'm not sure I'd call it dystopian but it had a flare of dystopian to it or at least the sequel would. (I don't think that would be considered a spoiler) It doesn't really matter if it's dystopian or not though, because I am glad it was recommended. Age of Miracles is a well written book. The type of book that makes you want to continue to read even though you know you should be sleeping, or doing the laundry, or bathing the dog...you get my point. Powell's Staff, you picked a good one.

Silver Star
by
Jeannette Walls

It usually takes me a month to read a book. I read this book in 1 week. It's not that it's a particularly short book; it's just a well written book. I really enjoyed the Glass Castle so I thought, why not try another book by Ms. Walls. I was not let down. This may be a good book for you if you enjoy the beauty of adolescence, and really likable characters. The Silver Star will take you back to a time when life appeared more simple but really had more unspoken rules. A time when people truly cared and looked out for each other without being too quick to judge. It's a delightful reminder that family should always come first and be there for each other no matter what happened in the past.

Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail

Read it before you watch the movie? Does it really matter? This book wasn't really good, this book wasn't really bad. This book was okay. As I said in a previous review; this is the book that made me realize I have to like a character in order to like a book. No offense Cheryl, but I don't think I would want to hang out and have a beer with your 20+ year old self anytime soon. I agree 100% with another reviewer below. I wanted to read more about this awesome life changing hiking experience and less about sex, drugs, and (well there really wasn't any rock n roll). I admire Cheryl for continuing on this amazing journey. I would have given up for sure. To sum it up the writing style is enjoyable and easy to read, the content, not so much. If you have a friend who says "hey you want to borrow this book?" borrow it. If you are browsing through Powell's for your next great read; check out the Staff Picks and move on.

Vision of Fire
by
Gillian Anderson, Jeff Rovin

I feel I must first expose that I was a huge X-Fles fan in the 90's. This is what drew me to A Vision of Fire. Secondly, I've recently discovered that in order to be engaged in a book I have to like at least one of the characters. That said, this book was an easy read and it was engaging throughout. I agree with other reviews that I have read, the book leaves you with more questions than answers. I truly hope this is a series otherwise my review needs to be shortened to simply read "huh?".

Choke
by
Chuck Palahniuk
Penni4
, May 05, 2012
Not for the faint at heart, but by far one of the best Palahniuk books written. This is the first of his books I read. I enjoyed it so much I read 4 more of his books one right after the other. Yes it's a little sick but it does have some undertone humor to it. Though I wouldn't want Victor as a friend, he is an interesting character to follow around. If you prefer light hearted books this is not the book for you. If don't mind a bit of twisted, mind bending reading, read this book.

Rant
by
Chuck Palahniuk
Penni4
, May 05, 2012
How is there only 3 reviews on this book? Rant came recommended to me years ago by a good friend. I never read it. Then a year later it came recommended again, so this time I did read it. And I devoured every page. It is sick, and interesting, and disgusting and delightful. This is definitely one of my favorite Chuck P books. After having read this well written story I do have to question though if there is something seriously devious in me or in my friends?

Oryx and Crake (Maddaddam Trilogy #1)

Margaret Atwood

I Love this book. So much that I am reading it again and cannot wait for the 3rd book in the series to be finished and released. Read Dianah's Staff Pick of this book it is a good depiction of the story that lies ahead. Do you like dystopian novels? Do yo want to be entertained and also slightly frightened by the closeness to reality it could be? Get this book now and then get Year of The Flood.

Help

Kathryn Stockett

If you read The Secret Life of Bees or Fried Green Tomatoes at the Wistlestop cafe and liked them you will like this book. You can read the synopsis to know what the book is about. What I will tell you is that the book was well written. The Help has good character development and the story will keep you entertained throughout the entire book.

Hunger Games 01
by
Suzanne Collins

, January 09, 2012
I NEVER read a book in a weekend. I Love to read, but books usually lose me after a few chapters. This is one book that had me wanting to read more at every turn of the page. The Hunger Games is not the most thought provoking book, but the characters are incredibly believable that you become a viewer of the Game. It's a good book if you are at all interested in 1. dystopian books 2. books where the author doesn't feel the urge to use BIG words just to make the book sound smarter or 3. characters who you can relate to. With Two chapters left, I am running to Powell's to grab the 2nd and 3rd book of the trilogy.

The Publisher Comments pretty much say it all. Being I gave it four stars it's safe to say I liked this book. The characters were gritty, the story was easy to follow and the scenery was easy to visualize. It's a mystery, but you will not get lost. Overall it's a good easy read.

The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks
by
Rebecca Skloot
Penni4
, September 26, 2011
I am the type of reader who likes to read both fiction and non-fiction, making this book a good fit. I believe it is safe to say The Immortal Like of Henrietta Lacks walks the line of truth and memory. Memory is not always the best thing to rely on. That said, it is an interesting story. I enjoyed the style of jumping from the story of the cells, to the story of the Lacks family. It kept the book interesting. It amazes me, in talking with friends who are scientists who have likely used these cells, how no one seems to know the cells history. It is also interesting to be reminded how far we have come with medicine and with patient rights. I am glad Ms. Skloot pursued writing this book, as I believe the story needed to be told. If the topic interests you, I recommend reading this book.
