Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. The Road

This is the darkest novel I have ever read, and McCarthy's descriptions did nothing to assuage my fears. It was horrifying to imagine how far humanity can fall, but McCarthy masterfully wove hope into a world where no hope would usually be found. If it was any other author, the story may have become too bogged down by the surroundings, but this focuses so completely on the father and son that you don't get lost in the details. They are the focus, and they are the hope.

Mockingjay

This series rocks!! That may be a lame way of expressing how incredible this series is but it is the best I can do! I read each book in one day, so the entire series only took three days to read (and luckily for me, I started reading this series just as the last one came out so I didn't have to wait to read it!). This series has amazing characters that I was so compelled to follow along in their journey. It has been a long time since I have felt as if the book I was reading was real but this series did it! I felt pain over Rue, longing for Peeta, and shear panic when I thought the entire thing might end in tragedy. This series sucks you into a horrifying world, and won't let you leave until you come out at the end! The story is semi-political although it doesn't scream at you about affiliations, but more about what is really wrong in this world. I highly recommend this series so that you can be as captivated by the world that Suzanne Collins created as I was! Mockingjay perfectly completes this epic story!
