Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. Dirty Secret: A Daughter Comes Clean about Her Mother's Compulsive Hoarding
by
Jessie Sholl

At this point we have all heard of hoarders and may have even caught one of the programs on TV. This is the story of one of the children who grew up in a hoarded home. It is a bitter sweet story in turns tear jerking and laughter inducing. This is the story the TV programs and newspaper articles so often ignore when the experts caution patience and support of the hoarders, when the comments wonder where the children were and how they could do nothing. I highly recommend this book.

A Kingdom's Possession
by
Persun, Nicole J.

Nicole J. Persun is a masterful storyteller. "A Kingdom's Possession" has everything, an escaped slave, an escaped prince, kingdoms, spies, a goddess in human form, a phoenix, a secret room, an enchanted forest, magic and more without being silly or kitschy (the cover had me a little worried). It was a real story with real people. I'd love to tell more, but fear I'd just spoil the story. I thoroughly enjoyed her voice and was disappointed when the book ended because I wanted to learn more about the characters, I wanted to know what happened next.

Dirty Secret: A Daughter Comes Clean about Her Mother's Compulsive Hoarding
by
Jessie Sholl

Jessie Sholl is an excellent storyteller as she shares what is for most Americans a shameful secret, that a loved one, perhaps even their parent, is a hoarder. She tells her story of growing up with a hoarding mother and how that shaped her development into an adult child of a hoarder. Sholl efficiently adds current research on hoarding into a very touching memoir.
