Black Tower
by
Louis Bayard

, July 24, 2008
The author, Louis Bayard, takes us on a harrowing adventure in to the lives of Hector Carpentier, once a respected physician who now lives with is mother who has turned her home into a boarding house to make ends meet. A suspicious murder leads the most feared detective in all of Paris, Eugene Francois Vidocq to Hector's door. I found Vidocq to be a mixture of a modern day frumpy Columbo, with a mastery for disguise befitting the famous Sherlock Holmes. As Vidocq, who has ties with Paris's underground investigates you are drawn into the story about a little boy being held in The Black Tower, who is rumored to be the late Marie Antoinette's son, the Dauphin! Bayard is a brilliant author who makes you feel like you are living in the story! I couldn't put this book down until I finished it! The mystery continues to the very last page. It's a real spellbinder! Bayard is now on my list of favorite authors! You MUST READ his series!

Dough: A Memoir
by
Mort Zachter
QuetziLibros
, July 11, 2008
I found this book to be an utterly delightful read! The author, Mort Zachter, has a penchant for tying the past and present together into a seamless story. This true story is about Mort's Uncle Harry and Uncle Joe who owned and worked in a day old bread store all their lives; labled by family as work-a-holics who never married, actually they were both married to the store and deprived themselves of any luxuries. Even Mort's mom, Harry & Joe's sister, gave up her dream of being a full time teacher to help her brothers, free of charge, in the day old bread store. Mort relates to the reader a candid story woven together from bits and pieces of information that he has gathered about his Uncles and turns it into a spell binding read. This story opened up the floodgates of a million memories from my own childhood, which I'm sure everyone has an Uncle Harry somewhere in their gene pool! This is an unforgettable memoir that you must not miss reading. It is so captivating and charming, that when I sat down to read it I couldn't put it down until I finished the very last page! I recommend "Dough" for all ages. You will be caught up in this memoir from beginning to end! I'm thrilled that Mort Zachter has given up his CPA practice to become a full time writer, I'm looking forward to many more hours of great entertainment with his books! Great job Mort!
