Kelsey Ford: Celebrate Short Story Month: 7 Recommendations Based on 7 Collections We Love (0 comment)
I love short story collections because of how much they manage to do with so little. They can dilate, expand, shatter, constellate. Within any given collection, you can move from the moon to a diner after midnight to that liminal minute right when you wake up but are still knee-deep in a dream..

    True Grit by Charles Portis
    wojoko, July 28, 2014
Told from the point of view of the 14-year-old Mattie, who sets off to avenge the murder of her father, this is a true American story that should be read along with other American classics and by anyone who wants a view of frontier America in the 1800s.

Longitude: The True Story of a Lone Genius Who Solved the Greatest Scientific Problem of His Time by Dava Sobel
    wojoko, January 23, 2013
This is one of the most interesting books I've ever read. Until nearly 1800, sailors had no way of determining what longitude they were at so they couldn't tell how far they'd traveled or how close they were to where they wanted to go. While the scientific establishment was focused on astronomy, a watchmaker built the solution and then had to spend years convincing the scientific establishment that his method worked.

On Writing: A Memoir Of The Craft by Stephen King
    wojoko, February 09, 2012
Whether or not you are an aspiring writer, and whether or not you enjoy Stephen King's other books, you will very likely enjoy this book. The book contains a lot of autobiographical information from King's early life when he started writing stories and during his struggles with addiction. He also provides a lot of useful information about his own writing process and tips for aspiring writers. And if you are a fan of the television show Lost you will recognize how this book influenced the creators of Lost.

Silent Girl A Rizzoli & Isles Novel by Tess Gerritsen
    wojoko, August 04, 2011
This is Gerritsen's best book so far. All of her books are suspense filled page turners. This book is more nuanced and I think has a much more interesting portrayal of many of the characters, along with an interesting case.

    Huntress by Malinda Lo
    wojoko, July 07, 2011
Amazing book. I couldn't put it down. Vivid storytelling. The author created an entirely new and interesting world. Don't be fooled by the young adult category, this book can be enjoyed by people of all ages.
