Teatime for the Firefly
by
Shona Patel
Catherine Chandler
, January 14, 2015
Teatime for the Firefly is such an incredible story--one of those that after you finish reading the last sentence, and put the book away, it stays with you for days. The story of Layla Roy's life is written from her character's perspective, giving it the feel of a long, intimate letter from a loved one. Through all of the ups and downs and complexities of her story-telling, the author's language is accessible, and her descriptions at once thorough and succinct. I truly felt as though I were in the story--in these places, with these characters. Knowing that there is some background from Shona Patel's familial history, and historical events, makes it that much more rich. There is a great balance of suspense, wonder, empathy, and adventure within these pages--I highly recommend it.

Lowland
by
Jhumpa Lahiri
Catherine Chandler
, September 24, 2014
I love it when weeks after reading a book, it will seep back into your brain and all you can think is, "I want to go there again." When I saw The Lowland by Jhumpa Lahiri, one of my favorite authors, I grabbed a copy right away. This book is full of such a wide range of emotions, you cannot help but be sucked in to the characters' world. Not only that, but it contains a great deal of historical context, begging the reader to reflect on their own ideas of history. Incredible writing--I cannot wait to read it again.

This Is Portland: The City You've Heard You Should Like
by
Alexander Barrett
Catherine Chandler
, December 28, 2013
As a born-and-bred Portlander, I often find myself rolling my eyes at the antics happening around me. The most recent? The uprising of lovers of the carpet at the PDX Airport--so much that there are news articles being written about it and what's this? SOCKS? Seriously folks, I love it too, but it's carpet. From the '90's. I can't even imagine what lies beneath it after that many years. "This is Portland" is one of those books that affirms that I am not alone. While I may love this city, there is much hilarity to be found in the neurosis of its inhabitants. Barrett does a wonderful job of exhibiting some of the most beloved quirks with great humor and fondness.

Against All Grain
by
Danielle Walker
Catherine Chandler
, November 15, 2013
I cannot say enough good things about this book. When I first found out about Against All Grain, I was beyond excited. When I held my very own copy in my hands, I almost teared up--I can eat every single recipe in this book! What an amazing feeling, to know that I can look up a recipe, make it, and enjoy it without having the hassle of figuring out substitutes and failing multiple times. Danielle Walker has tested all her recipes, and provided a growing community with an essential collection of homemade meals and resources that are for 'every-day living.' I have tried multiple recipes--the crackers, 'tortilla chips', tortillas, braised chicken with artichoke and mushrooms, pot roast, pumpkin muffins, etc. They have all turned out amazing. I cannot wait to see what Walker brings to us next!

Arts Of The Sailor Knotting Splicing & Ropework
by
Hervey Garret Smith
Catherine Chandler
, November 15, 2013
As a novice to rope-working and knot-tying, I have found this book to be extremely helpful in my endeavors. I came across it quite by accident and am extremely happy--the language and text are easy to understand, as are the instructions and illustrations. In the short amount of time I have had this book, I have carried it with me everywhere, and loaned it to friends multiple times. Concise, to the point, and yet full of a wealth of information.

What We Talk About When We Talk About Love
by
Raymond Carver
Catherine Chandler
, August 26, 2013
I wanted to like these stories. I wanted this book to tell me something about communication, and love, and relationships. And, maybe it does, but mostly it seems to just tell stories about addiction, deception, and people who just generally fail at being good human beings. Life is suffering, but it is also joy. The stories within this collection depict the struggles...and seemingly, only the struggles. Honestly, after reading 3-4 stories, I just had to put it down.

Essays of E B White
by
E B White
Catherine Chandler
, August 26, 2013
Growing up, I had no idea that E.B. White wrote anything other than "Charlotte's Web." I soon learned, through college, that he was, in fact, an esteemed author, contributing countless essays and stories to publications. While I have generally shied away from collections of author essays, preferring instead to get lost in fiction, White's auction reads less like informative essays and more like a journal. We are transported back in time, traveling through history and catching a glimpse at what his life was like--what society was like. Peppered with antics of his farm animals, and the trials and tribulations of living in rural Maine, the fluctuations within White's writings create a rhythmic collection that should not be missed.

Light Boxes
by
Jones, Shane
Catherine Chandler
, August 22, 2013
An incredibly beautiful story! Jones builds his characters carefully, drawing the reader in, making us want more. The story is complex, as a modern fable should be, and the lessons within can be easily correlated to real life. Absolutely stunning imagery and imagination.

Palace of Illusions
by
Chitra B Divakaruni
Catherine Chandler
, July 21, 2011
About 7 years ago, I developed a fascination and love for novels about India, whether it be a story about an Indian family, Indian immigrants in America, or like "The Palace of Illusions", a tale that is intertwined with the folklore of India. These stories fascinate me and take me to another world--it is almost impossible to put them down. Chitra Banerjee Divakaruni is a master of weaving such tales, that hook you with emotion, and keep you enthralled to the very end. I have read almost all of her books and highly recommend each one.
