Five Book Friday: In Memoriam
(0 comment)
Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. My two young boys are really into comics, but the problem I have is most are aimed to quite older children. I was so happy to find Smash. It was exciting without being gory, the story was enthralling, and the drawings are fantastic. We spent a week reading it at bed time, with each session ending the same way- my boys begging to read a few more pages. We were really sad when it was over, but the ending gives hope that a sequel might happen. Which everyone in my house hopes for as well. If you have children, or even loved comics yourself as a child, you'll love Smash.

The subject of this book didn't sound interesting to me at all. I read an excerpt on NPR though, and thought it was well written so I gave the book a try. I am really glad I did. It is a beautiful book, well written with beautiful language. The author really sets up some powerful images and scenes without it feeling forced or contrived. I rarely recommend a book to anyone but I have recommended this book again and again.
