Five Book Friday: In Memoriam
(0 comment)
Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

I'll admit the cover was what drew me to this book when I first saw it on a website advertising upcoming titles. Then I read a little about it...a story set in Germany during World War II told from a woman's perspective but written by a man...okay, this was definately going on the TBR list. I patiently waited for the release date and then for the library to catalog the book. Finally, it arrived and it was worth the wait. One of the best books I've read this year.....and it has a pretty cover.

Great Southern Lit! I picked up this book because I needed to read a paperback to complete our library's summer reading program. Little did I know that it would turn out to be the best book I'd read all summer. This would make a great book discussion group read.

Road to Grace

A good selection for someone looking for good clean fiction and a "must read" for anyone who has read the first two books in the WALK series. I would not recommend reading this without having first read the other two books. One of the things I enjoy most about the stories is discovering back roads America. I'd probably never have known about Wall Drug or the Mark Twain Museum if I hadn't listened to this book. Richard Paul Evans narrated the audiobook and did an excellent job.

Great reading entertainment with big screen potential. The Professionals was my book-of-the-week for my daily 30-60 minute stationary bike ride and was a great choice. The frequent scene changes (3-6 page chapters) kept my eyes off the clock and the story moving forward. The characters were believeable and I wasn't sure who I liked more the kidnappers or the cops. It would make a great take-on-vacation read and I'll be recommending it to friends.

Delightful! Perfect read-aloud stories. When I first opened the book I noted that there were a lot of words and few illustrations on each page. Not what I usually look for in a book that I intend to use for the library's story time program. Any negative feelings I had disappeared before the end of the first page. The stories are enough to hold the children's attention without a lot of page turning and each story is better than the one before it. If you can only afford to buy one children's book, this is the one! After reviewing the library's copy, I ordered 3 copies - one for me, one for my grandchildren and one as a gift.
