Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Laughed 'Til He Died
by
Carolyn Hart

Carolyn Hart writes some of my favorite books. Her "Death on Demand" Series are all concerning mysteries on the small island where she and her newly-wed husband live. With entertaining characters and lively plots she keeps our attention. The small book store she owns provides numerous suggestions for books to buy, and her big cat rules. This mystery has a particularly obnoxious villain who laughs at everything and everyone; he's not a person you'd want to know. Discovering who killed him is quite a puzzle, since he's disliked by so many. You'll enjoy Hart's humor, as well as her methodical plot which involves the total community, in one way or another. If this is the first book in this series you've read, I promise, you'll want to begin with Hart's first...DEATH ON DEMAND.....and read them all. I have; it's great reading!

Sand Sharks
by
Margaret Maron

Deborah Knott mysteries always entertain, and Sand Sharks is no exception. Margaret Maron is a sharp, witty writer who combines story telling with a strong sense of family. Her main character, Judge Deborah Knott, is a fair, compassionate person, but she always manages to embroil herself in a mystery.....most likely involving a corpse and a murderer. Even when she's on vacation in a beautiful beach location, she is in the middle of an investigation. Not only does Maron write a good mystery, but she does it with humor. That makes the book a winner for me.

For anyone who is a fan of E. Stanley Jones, reading about his wife is a must! For years I've read his books, but seldom heard her mentioned. Finally with this book, I've learned what a wonderful person she was, and about so many talents she had. If you enjoy reading about capable women, this book is a must!

Around The Year With Emmet Fox
by
Emmet Fox

Foxe is an author of the early 1900's that I just discovered. This book is comprised of daily meditations and is most helpful. Anyone interested in personal religious growth would benefit from his ideas. Each meditation is only a page, but offers much for reflection.
