Five Book Friday: In Memoriam
(0 comment)
Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

Roots of Style
by
Isabel Toledo, Ruben Toldeo
Sarah A
, August 05, 2012
While I am not a "fashionista" by any means, Roots of Style was perhaps all the more intriguing to me because Isabel Toledo's fundamental message is about following your passion and talent, and about artistry, which made the idea of "high fashion" more approachable. Her tone is not at all distant, but clear and grounded, explaining how her memories, lessons learned, and connections and collaborations cohered and eased her into the fashion world with such success. I found that I wanted to look up pictures of her actual pieces while she mentioned them or the concepts behind them, and the illustrations by Ruben Toledo are a fun part of the read.

Let Your Body Interpret Your Dreams
by
Eugene T Gendlin
Sarah A
, August 04, 2012
This is a guide with a practical approach to the personal subject of what your dreams are telling you. I knew from the the first pages that this book would have a positive impact on my life because it tells you how to help yourself explore and understand your life situations and to trust yourself. Further, it takes the next step towards applying what you learn in your waking life, which is very rare for "dream books." I was so impressed with this book, I would recommend anyone to read it, and I myself am going to check out more of Gendlin's works.

Teenage Liberation Handbook 1st Edition 1991
by
Grace Llewellyn
Sarah A
, September 23, 2011
The Teenage Liberation Handbook restored some of my sanity when I was in high school, by reassuring me that the issues I was having with "standard" public education didn't mean I was abnormal. I couldn't believe a book had the subtitle "how to quit school and get a real life and education." And indeed, I almost quit school because of this book; it brought me a sense of peace and agency that was essential even if I did not end up homeschooling or some alternative arrangement.
