Peeing on Hot Coals: Drowning the Devil
by
Pat Montandon

This is a fascinating memoir by Pat Montandon. It is an entertaining, funny, horrific and amazing story beginning when she was a young girl in the Dustbowl of Oklahoma with very evangelistic parents through to her life as a 'socialite' in San Francisco. Could not put it down!

Walter Cronkite

An excellent autobiography by Walter Cronkite. Full of history, but also very entertainly written - lots of funny anecdotes! Includes his personal life, careers in journalism, radio, TV at the very beginning through to the end of his career in that field, and the many wars that he covered. A fabulous round-up of 20th century history as well as a history of an amazing reporter with much integrity.

One on One. Craig Brown

Fascinating, humorous and very entertaining non-fiction book of 101 actual encounters between famous people, all thoroughly researched as listed in the bibliography. Some of the meetings are Paul McCartney meets Elvis, Elvis meets President Nixon, Nixon meets Peggy Lee, Petty Lee meets Truman Capote, and so on. The book includes much history in its circle of 101 meetings, e.g., Grigori Rasputin and Tsar Nicholas II, Tsar and Harry Houdini, Houdini and Theodor Roosevelt, TR and H.G. Wells, Wells and Josef Stalin... A book that can be read a little at a time, but I warn you it is very addictive!

I haven't even finished it yet, but it is extraordinary! One of those books you don't want to put down, but also one you want to last a long time.

The Breaking of Eggs
by
Jim Powell

Fascinating novel not only about the history one doesn't learn in school of the rise and fall of communism in eastern Europe, but also the breakdown of one person's lifelong beliefs and their confrontation with reality. Depressing to read about all the hardships people went through, but uplifting to realize people can change their outlook on life by changing their attitudes and thought processes.

Cooking Dirty

What a hoot of a read! Anyone who is thinking of working in a restaurant, owning a restaurant, even eating in a restaurant should read this book! It is an amazing collection of reminiscences from an author who has worked in over 30 different kitchens, from his start mopping floors to being a 'chef,' to running an entire hotel food service; from his great times to his burnouts. From the brawls in the kitchen, the burns, the drinking, the highs to the lows - he holds back very little. Some of it is fun, some of it is sad, much of it is very eyeopening, as well as funny and all of it reads true - even if it is altered to protect the 'guilty.' Just don't be offended by the language that is common in most any restaurant kitchen!
