Krakauer has once again demonstrated his ability to write page-turning non-fiction. This book explores the differences between Mormons and Mormon Fundamentalists. Krakauer skillfully explains the origins of Mormonism, and the point where the Mormon Fundamentalists branched off from the Church of Latter Day Saints. Krakauer presents the information through true stories, interviews and historical fact, and allows the reader to draw their own conclusions.

Considering that I was fortunate enough to hear Elva read her work at a conference, I could hear her speaking voice throughout the heartrendingly authentic prose of 'Barefoot Heart'. The book is a memoir of the accomplishments and tribulations experienced by Elva and her family while living as Mexican immigrants in Texas and as migrant farm workers in Minnesota. The incorporation of Spanish words and phrases lends realism to the book. Although the stories are simple and generally uncomplicated, they evoke exceptionally strong emotions.

Frazier eloquently intertwines the struggles and successes of the protagonist Will Cooper, and the displacement of the Cherokee Nation living in the mountains of North Carolina. Underlying the central story of Cooper and the removal of the Cherokee Nation, this book illustrates the 19th century transformation of America from rugged wilderness into a developed nation. Despite mixed reviews, ‘Thirteen Moons’ is a brilliantly imagined and well worth the time.
