Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. I highly recommend digging into the recommendations — we would never lead you astray — but today...

The Maze Runner is intense and definitely keeps you on your toes. I enjoyed the book immensely. The characters are great and mostly believable. The writing is fluent--I couldn't stop turning the pages! A reader of any age will enjoy this book.

Divergent 01

I know it's considered frowned upon to watch the movie before reading the book, but I had to with Divergent. I had heard so much about it, but unfortunately didn't have enough time to read the novel first. Despite this, I can say that I thoroughly enjoyed this novel more than its film counterpart. I feel more of a connection to Tris in the novel and I preferred the book's version of some of the events. I'm excited to read Insurgent next (before the film comes out)!

Eleanor and Park

Rainbow Rowell

I had heard so much about this book that I had to get my hands on it, just to see what all the talk was about. I'm glad I did because I'm hooked! Rowell is such a talented writer, all her books are now on my "to-read" list. While parts of this story are sad, the love and meaning behind the sadness shines through. I find myself rooting for Eleanor and Park. And the ending, it's such a mystery. A must read for anyone, not just YA.

I loved Eleanor and Park, so I thought I would try another of Rainbow Rowell's novels--I wasn't disappointed! I love Fangirl! It reminds me so much of when I started reading and writing Fanfiction, I almost thought it was about me! I'm so happy and grateful that someone has finally taken the time to write a novel about the Fanfiction culture. Thank you, Rowell, for writing such a fantastic novel. I wish there was more!

Ender's Game: Ender Wiggin Saga 1

I enjoyed reading this book because, even though the experience is unrelatable to most (all) people, the feelings behind the experience are not. Both aspects of the novel drove me to continue reading. I had to find out what happened to Ender. While there are some situations in the novel that I'm not sure are appropriate for kids/ young adults under the age of 12, any kid/young adult who enjoys the concept of space and developing a real connection to the characters will love Ender's Game.

Hunger Games 01

Suzanne Collins

I loved the Hunger Games series, especially the first of the trilogy. It's intense and exciting, which is what I enjoy reading. I'm also a sucker for a love story and The Hunger Games has a lovable couple, Peeta and Katniss. I recommend this novel to anyone--teenager or adult. One can never be too young for a dystopian novel such as this one.
