Widow's Tears: A China Bayles Mystery: China Bayles 21
by
Susan Wittig Albert
Lynn Lesperance
, April 24, 2013
The best of this series to date. Ruby, grieving and feeling overwhelmed with business and family issues, heads out of town for a few days to help a friend and to try and think about what it is she really wants to do with the rest of her life. Instead she ends up in the middle of the strangest situation she has ever come across. Meanwhile, another story is playing out in 1900 where Rachel Blackburn and her five children are caught in the Galveston Hurricane, the worst natural disaster in US History. This book is nearly impossible to put down and both tales are equally compelling. Read it!

Week in Winter
by
Maeve Binchy
Lynn Lesperance
, April 17, 2013
The late Maeve Binchy unfailingly welcomed the reader into a comforting world where everyone knows everyone else and redemption is always close at hand. This last work is more a collection of short stories tied together through a big stone mansion cum hotel in rural Western Ireland, yet it works as a novel with all the gentle insights, acceptance of individual foibles, and just plain heart her readers have come to expect. So grab a cup of tea and a comfortable chair and go there, to Maeve's world, one last time

Lets Pretend This Never Happened
by
Jenny Lawson

If you are of a delicate nature, easily offended, or terrified of squirrels, run far far away from this book. If, on the other hand, you enjoy snarky, bizarrish humor, this is the one for you. Jenny Lawson is hilarious.

Mas just wants a normal life. It's what she's always wanted and never found. With a cast of characters ranging from her larger than life, fortune-telling mama to her n'er do well of a husband, she is surrounded by everything BUT normal. She is unhappy in her job and her marriage but she has two young daughters she adores and an optimistic nature. Will that be enough? Can she ever find what she truly wants? Will she recognize it if it ever happens? An enjoyable romp.

The title drew me in. The bookstore, the characters, the Quest, and the insider's peek at Google kept me there. The glow-in-the-dark cover is icing on the cake.

A well-written memoir of the last two years the author, Will Schwalbe spent with his mother as she died of pancreatic cancer. More about the mother than the books but still an engaging read.

Gone Girl

Gillian Flynn

The story of a marriage gone horribly wrong. Amy and Nick seem like the perfect couple- smart, beautiful, loving. When Amy goes missing though, another picture of this couple comes to light which is quite different. Heart pounding, brain twisting, page turning psychological thriller. Read it if you dare.

The Invisible Wall
by
Harry Bernstein
Lynn Lesperance
, November 06, 2012
A memoir of a boy's childhood in England around the time of World War I. The city street Harry grew up on was divided by an invisible wall, keeping the Jews and the Christians who lived there separated. A picture of a long gone ago of poverty and hardship but love and dreams as well. A good listen!

Beautiful Ruins
by
Jess Walter
Lynn Lesperance
, October 31, 2012
Alternating between 1962 and "recently" Beautiful Ruins follows a small group of people from an earlier era in Italy to the present in the USA. A pleasant enough story in its own right, it is more effective as a thoughtful tale about the choices we make in life: where they lead us and how they effect the people whose lives touch our own. Realistic enough to show that not everyone gets what they truly deserve but romantic enough for dreaming.

Death of a Kingfisher
by
M C Beaton
Lynn Lesperance
, September 18, 2012
AUDIO BOOK REVIEW Alas, tourism, greed and murder have all joined forces in beautiful Braikie, Scotland. A lovely spot, it had offered little to anyone other than the locals, until someone has the bright idea to use the natural scenery to create a fairy glen to draw in the tourist dollars. A hanged kingfisher is a sign to the superstitious townspeople that things are not right, and a wave of vandalism begins which seems to lead to multiple murders. Luckily, this wee village is part of the intrepid Hamish MacBeth's beat so the solution will be found. But will justice be served?

Sandcastle Girls A Novel
by
Chris Bohjalian
Lynn Lesperance
, September 18, 2012
Author, Chris Bohjalian returns to his Armenian family roots as the inspiration for this expository tale of love, loss and genocide. Elizabeth Endicott is a young Bostonian woman who has traveled to Syria on a humanitarian mission with her father during the extermination of the Armenians. She expected to experience adventure and aid those in need but nothing could have prepared her for the atrocities she witnessed or the great love she found. As a chapter in history that has long been swept aside, it is eye-opening and heart-rending tale. As Bojhalian spares no detail in his description of war and its resulting horrors though, this is definitely not for the faint of heart - or the delicate of sensibilities.

Bringing Up Bebe
by
Pamela Druckerman
Lynn Lesperance
, August 15, 2012
I enjoyed this book much more than I expected. I thought it would be something I would just kind of dip into to see what it was all about but it captured my attention right from the start and turned out to be a fun and engaging memoir. Pamela Druckerman and her husband start a family in Paris, where the author sets out to discover why French moms and their children seem so much calmer than Americans. Is there a secret, or secrets? Well, yes, and no, sort of. Laugh out loud funny in places, this book will give the reader lots to think about regarding child-raising and life in general.
