Rin Tin Tin The Life & the Legend
by
Susan Orlean

More than a portrait of the original and legendary Rin Tin Tin, Susan Orlean discusses early Hollywood, the cult of a movie star (albeit a canine one), the love between a human and a noble dog, and the admirers, fans and dog lovers alike, who have kept Rinty's legend alive over the decades of silent film, talkies, radio dramas, and television adventure shows. Orlean's humor, research, and sensitivity to her subject are all present in this book, which I would recommend to those interested in American popular culture as well as anyone who treasures a relationship with a special dog, even if the dog in question existed only in the movies.

Rin Tin Tin The Life & the Legend
by
Susan Orlean, Robert J Horton

Susan Orlean is a wonderful creative nonfiction writer because she makes readers interested in and fascinated by topics they'd never before thought of. This account of the very famous and fabled Rin Tin Tin, star of early Hollywood silent films. and later, because of his progeny, star of radio, vaudeville, and television shows, is also the story of his trainer and owner, Lee Duncan. Orlean weaves the story of the German shepherd puppy first discovered by Duncan in a battlefield in France in WWI with Duncan's own lonely childhood in an orphanage, and the subsequent rise to fame of both dog and human is related to issues concerning American culture at this time and to the historical events of the war years and decades beyond. Well researched and very entertaining, Orlean has created a tribute to the bond between humans and animals, blending her strong narrative voice with meticulous research as well as humor and emotion.
