Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. Mechanique A Tale of the Circus Tresaulti
by
Genevieve Valentine, Kiri Moth
Courtney Quinn
, March 08, 2013
There has always been magic in the circus. "Mechanique" pushes that idea to the extreme, exploring it from the point of view of a boy who grew up surrounded by, and thus blind to, the magic running beneath the surface. (When you think you know the trick, you let the jester fool you twice.) As the tale unfolds, the layers peel away, revealing in bits and pieces both the incredible forces at work and the terrible consequences of the same. A beautiful debut from Genevieve Valentine that left me on my feet crying, "Encore!" (Figuratively, of course. In truth, I simply closed my eyes and held the book close to my chest, unwilling to let go just yet.)

Ready Player One
by
Ernest Cline

This book is packed with references to 1980's movies, music, and video games. Even though I was never alive during that decade, I still had a blast reading this book (my love of modern video games may have helped that). Great fun throughout; I highly recommend it.
