Every year, the booksellers at Powell’s submit their Top Fives: their five favorite books that were released in 2023. It’s a list that, when put together, shows just how varied and interesting the book tastes of Powell’s booksellers are. Head Full of Ghosts
by
Paul G Tremblay
Bracken
, June 03, 2015
This is, simply put, the best book I've read this year. Paul Tremblay has constructed a masterful depiction of the unraveling of a family in crisis while simultaneously giving a tender and nuanced portrayal of the tenacity of the loving bond between siblings. It is at once frightening, tender, and remarkably intelligent (but if you know Tremblay, you HAVE to expect that last part). At every time you think you have a handle on where this story is going, he shifts the angle and gives the reader a fresh view of what's happening that is deeper and both more and less certain. Anyone who thinks this is going to be another garden variety possession tale or take down of "reality" entertainment has got another thing coming. A Head Full of Ghosts is an absolute triumph, and my favorite thing both this year and that I've ever read of his.

Enter, Night
by

This was, hands down, the best book I read in 2012. Enter, Night is not a book about self-loathing, weepy, romantic, hero vampires. It’s about regular people facing down a force of evil that treats them as cattle and converts. I don't read widely in the vampire sub-genre because of the conventions established by Anne Rice, Stephanie Meyer, and their imitators. This book, however, helped restore my confidence that a vampire novel can be a character-driven tale about relatable people facing adversity caused by something terrible and beyond their understanding or control. The vampires in the book are monstrous and scary, mainly because their appearance is rare, they are unrepentantly violent, and the focus of our sympathies are for their victims, not them. Be warned, however, this is not an action-packed Hollywood style romp. This book is a slow-burn, creepy, atmospheric horror novel.
